    Dear Parents and Students:

We have started mailing copies of the Marauder to the fourth grade
parents. It is thought that this will give the new incoming parents a
good indication of the kinds of activities that take place at the middle
school. We look forward to welcoming all fourth grade students and
    parents to the middle school.

It is good to see that the middle school students still have a
    high
percentage of students on the honor rolls.

Mid Year Review: At the past Building Planning team meeting the
    majority of t
he meeting was on reviewing the middle school action
plans for the 20002001 school year. Each action plan and each
immediate action step was reviewed to see if it was still valid and/or
completed. We were very happy to note that the majority of the plan
    s
and action steps were completed or on their way to completion.

Spring Test Planning: The committee for spring testing has me t three
times. We are in the final stages of planning for the spring test
schedule. This year the eighth grade students have two more state
mandated tests added to their test schedule. The social studies and
science are the new additions. In many districts technology will be
added to the eighth grade test schedule, but in Williamson we will be
giving the test at the seventh grade because that is when the students
take the course. It will be a full spring test schedule at the 58 levels
and especially at the 8th grade. As we get closer to the test dates we
will have more information available to the parents and students.

MidYear Math Examination: We gave an eighth grade math
examination to all eighth grade students modeled after the state test.
This was like a dry run for all the organization and test modifications.

    News from Ms.
    Luke’s Classroom

    Ms. Luke’s ELA/Social Studies classes
(which includes Mr. Marshall’s class) have been
busy reading novels correlated with our social
studies. We have completed reading together Dear
Levi (about the Overland Trail) and Pink and Say
(about the Civil War). We also completed writing
assignments that had to do with our curriculum.

Soon we will be on a “MayaQuest” through a
special internet program offered to schools. This is
an interactive program with many followup
    activities.

As a special treat, we sometimes have a Reading
Beach Party, which is a notalking, independent
silent reading time. We can read on our beach
towels, on the floor, with a book we have brought
from home. A snack and drink are optional. We
do this on a Friday for a 40minute period.

Last month, the following students completed the
required 360 minutes reading at home to receive a
BookIt reward: Matt Guilfoil, Jacob Gage, Joey
Davis, Ashley Haskins, Alex Schuhart, Abe Peters,
    Colby Geraci, Danielle Ottenschot, Amber
    Foehner, Rachael Gnage.

    Students
    Combine
    Math and Computers
    By Mrs. Grandjean

Students in Mrs. Grandjean’s 6th grade Math
classes are becoming very proficient on the
computer. For the first activity, they surveyed their
classmates to see what kinds of pets they owned
and created frequency tables of their data. The
classes then spent time with Ms. McCain in the
computer lab learning about spreadsheets and
graphs. They then entered the data into a
spreadsheet and created a bar graph of their
    statistics using the Chart Wizard.

Moving into the next phase of spreadsheets,
students have been working on a Chapter project in
which they become owners of a business with a
product to sell. They must set the price for their
product, calculate what the price would be after tax,
and also calculate the price with a 10% Senior
Citizen discount. To do this, they learned how to
set up a spreadsheet on the computer and how to
enter the formulas so that the prices would be
    calculated automatically.

They are now working on the last part of their
project. They must create an advertisement for
their “business”. They have learned how to use a
publishing program to make an eyecatching ad,
    hoping to attract new customers.

I think the students have really enjoyed being able
to work in the computer lab with Ms. McCain on
these projects and we can’t wait to see the finished
    projects!

International Club meets at 2:15pm in Room 13 on
    March 9th.
    Mr. Skeet (continued)
It will also give us good feedback as to the
student’s strengths and weak areas. It was a two
day test at an hour each day.

Happy midwinter to all. If anyone has any
questions concerning the middle school, please feel
    free to contact me.

    Sincerely yours,

    News

    By Mr. Brown

From spreadsheets used to analyze data for
running an ice cream truck to designing fantasy
house floor plans math lab students have been
engaged in a variety of learning activities.
    Furthermore the students have been
    u
    sing the
    Comprehensive School Mathematics Program
(CSMP), software in the Mac Computer Lab to
reinforce basic skills, and have w
    atched videos that
have shown how math is used in unique ways along
with traditional math such as probability and
    graphs.

Ice Cream Truck is a software program that
allows students to operate a business. The students
are to use data that is given to them to make
strategic decisions about how much ice cream to
order and where to sell it. This program represents
an application using note making which is a
technique from Silver and Strong Learning Styles.
The students made spreadsheets which correlated
with a project that sixth graders worked on in their
    regular math class.

The Fantasy House Floor Plans is an extension
of the software program, “Tenth Planet – Fraction
Operations.” In the computer lab students learned
to multiply fractions by looking at a house plan that
was divided into fractions. The students had to
make their bedrooms a size that would be a fraction
of the fraction that was shown. Each student then
designed his/her own floor plan on a permit
application. Some of these homes include
swimming pools, basketball courts, running/go kart
tracks, arcades, hot tubs, and computer rooms.
Currently the floor plans are on display on the
bulletin board outside of the Math Lab. However,
the floor plans will also be shown at the Learning
    Fair.

What happens at a READERS, Inc. meeting? First
of all, all our activities are designed to promote

new books, see what is being published and try
