Update on new State mandates

Literacy Profile - Implementation

• If your school has been identified as one in need of improvement, you must put the Literacy Profile into place
• If you already have something in place, you may go ahead and use your current system for identifying children early on who are at risk for failing the fourth grade test

ELA Assessments

• Use of reference materials on the test? No - only test modifications for special ed. if IEP indicates the need
• Training for scoring of the ELA Assessment? BOCES is offering two workshops
  • one for ELA Grade 4, April 8th
  • one for Math, Grade 4, April 22
  • 8th Grade - Training Workshops will be offered in June
• Nancy Ruscio will speak to our group about the assessments, scoring, and training sessions in more detail at the next meeting
• Several questions were posed regarding the assessments, directions and guidelines for administering the new State tests
• All were advised to check out Docushare for the latest information and documents regarding the assessments

English Language Arts Core Curriculum

• This document is available to all teachers—see your Regional Instructional Council Representative
• A concern regarding district representation on the Regional Instructional Council was discussed—as a group we need an administrative link

ELA Assessment - New York State Test Sampler Drafts

• Available to districts through their principals and BOCES
• Can be copied for “pilot” administration to students this year

Questions for RIC

1. Continuity of the membership of this group?
2. Summer Work? Possibility?
3. Vehicle to get information from RIC if district representative is not present at the RIC meetings?

• Karen Salvia provided additional materials regarding literacy and effective schools
• Suggested we review what we already have and add to what we’ve already consolidated as the characteristics of good schools and categorize this information for clarity
• Taking the list which was generated at the last meeting we categorized all the characteristics into the following categories: SEE ATTACHED LIST

NEXT STEPS

1. Get categorized list of characteristics to all participants
2. Next Meeting - review categories and determine if each category encompass what we believe an effective school is
