Lesson Summary |
Students are looking at a slide show of photographs from the National Archives and a packet of posters from and then analyzing the pictures by looking at people, objects, and activities, and making inferences based on what they observe in the pictures. They are then presenting their analyses and inferences to the rest of the class. |

Students have been reading Karen Hesse’s novel Out of the Dust and looking at primary source materials from the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. Assessment has been ongoing with class activities, worksheets and quizzes
Students will demonstrate understanding of the time period through an analysis of the pictures in the slide show and the posters.
Students will have completed sheets in their notebooks that include inferences based on their observations and will then present their observations and inferences to the rest of the class. |

Instructional Procedures |
Large group – I will give each student a photo analysis worksheet for each photo they will be analyzing. I will first show the students the slide show of the Dust Bowl photographs. Students will then get to choose slides to use for analyzing and making inferences. We will work as a large group on the first picture and then students will work individually on the next picture before sharing answers in the large group setting.
Small group – Students will work with a partner and analyze and make inferences on a poster picture from the Dust Bowl. They will then share their analyses and inferences with the rest of the class.
