Letter to the Board
April 24, 2009
“Ideals are like the stars: we never reach them, but like the mariners of the sea, we chart our course by them.” - Carl Schurz
Board Letter:
1. Varsity Wrestling Coach: Former wrestling coach Scott Freischlag has applied for the varsity position opened up by the resignation of Ron Gross. This is great news.
2. Walworth Library:
The Walworth library has sent us a letter withdrawing their proposition to increase the library tax. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that discussion.
3. Building Project: Greg and I meet with the architects next week to discuss modifications to the elementary building plan, should the district decide to create one campus.
4. Building Aid: We have received our much awaited letter from Carl Thurneau of Facilities Planning. He has denied our request for additional aid. He points out that the district would already see a sizeable financial savings in personnel from the project and so doesn’t need additional SED aid to make it worthwhile. He also points out that we are proposing to build significant new square footage to OP and it is unreasonable to expect that such a project would ever be fully aideable. He seems to be continuing the line of thought that Greg began hearing about a year ago from the department, which is that local districts will be expected to assume more of the cost of projects. I once did a ten million dollar project and paid the local share with a Pepsi pouring rights deal. I think those days are gone. The good news is that we probably do have enough money in our reserve accounts to pay the local share, should you desire.
5. Windmill: Four seniors begin assembling their senior project windmill on top of the Middle School today. It will power the lighting for the Middle School Memorial Garden. It should be a great project. Senior project presentations are less than a month away.
6. Superintendent’s son killed: Michael Hoose, Superintendent of Romulus, lost his son in an automobile accident last night. Please keep his family in your prayers.
7. Four County Annual Meeting: If any board members are interested in attending the Annual meeting, please let Lori know so she can register you. Once again, Wayne Central AP art students will be providing a display for the pre-meeting enjoyment.
8. Ginna Sirens: Constellation Energy will perform a full activation of the Ginna Prompt Notification System sirens on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 9:45 a.m.
