Board Letter
 
1.  Auditor Meeting: As was discussed last night, the State Comptroller’s auditor will present her findings to us on Tuesday, March 31st at 4:00 in the conference room. She doesn’t think it will take more than an hour. I know not everyone will be able to attend, but if you are available it would be a nice opportunity to hear her findings.
 
2.  Wayne is a McQuaid?: Last week Mr. Siracuse met with a home school parent whose child is entering 9th grade. Of course we love getting our homeschoolers back in school. The parent asked Joe if he knew what they say about Wayne. When Joe said no, the parent said, “They say that Wayne is like McQuaid.” Now, I might argue that Wayne is better than McQuaid, but still that was a wonderful compliment about your public school.
 
3.  BOCES Annual Meeting:     BOCES Annual Meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2009 at the Regional Support Center, 131 Drumlin Court, Newark, at 7:00 p.m. and will feature student speakers that will be sharing their thoughts representing our career/tech and special education programs. The meeting should adjourn at approximately 9 o’clock. Attached is an agenda. If you are planning to attend please let Lori know so she can let BOCES know.
 
4.  Three Boards Meeting:  Our next board meeting is on April 9, here at Wayne and it is the joint meeting on the Wayne Central School Board, the Walworth Town Board, and the Ontario Town Board. Please be thinking of what items you wish to have on the agenda for that meeting. Please let Lori know any items you would like to discuss.
 
5.  Susan Brown Letter: I have attached the most recent Susan Brown letter.
 
6.  Flags at Half Staff: Governor David A. Paterson has directed that flags on State government buildings be flown at half-staff on Friday, March 27, 2009, in honor of Rome, New York resident Marine Lance Corporal Daniel J. Geary, who died on Friday, March 20, 2009, in Farah Province, Afghanistan, and Fort Drum-based Private First Class (PFC) Adam J. Hardt, who died on Sunday, March 22, 2009, in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. Lance Corporal Geary, a member of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, died while supporting combat operations. PFC Hardt, a member of the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York, died in a non-combat incident.
 
7.  CPR Re-Certification: If any board member wishes to be CPR certified, you can register through the Wayne TRC for a course on May 6 from 6:00 -9:00 p.m. Please let Lori know.

 
8.  Community Center Grand Opening: The Board of Education is invited to attend the grand opening of the Community Center on April 4 from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.
 
9.  Relay for Life: Danielle Wilson (Nique’s daughter) is coordinating a “relay for life against cancer” at Wayne High School as part of her senior project. The event is being held on May 2nd from 10:00 – 1:30. Teams consist of appx 8 people. Teams take turns walking continuously for the 3.5 hours to raise money (based on sponsorship.) If the Board is interested in entering a team, you can let Danielle know by contacting her at relayforlife@wayne.k12.ny.us .

Dear Susan,
 
Thank you for your questions at the Board of Education meeting. I hope the answers below are of help to you.
 
1. Has the district examined how the universal pre-kindergarten program has impacted student success in kindergarten?
We are tracking that data. It does appear that the preschool program has had some impact however it is still too early to tell. The data is complicated because many of the students supported by New York State’s funding would have gone to pre-K anyways. Prior to the funding, about 80% of our children attended pre-K. That percent has risen slightly to 85%.
 
2. Has the district used AIS funds to provide a full day summer program for students not meeting academic goals?
To date we have not. We have only used it for the half day program. We have been concerned that parents and students would not react favorably to a full day program.
 



3. Is the Middle School planning to move to a standards-based report card?
We do not have plans at this time to change to a standards based report card similar to what the elementary is doing. I expect that once we have the elementary report card operating smoothly, we will want to look at the Middle School next.
