“Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.” ~Washington Irving, American author

Board Letter

1. Meeting with JV Cheerleading Parent: The meeting with the cheerleading parents lasted until 11:30. I went through the same explanation as in executive session. They were not happy and do not believe I value our cheerleading team. They did tell me one interesting bit of information which was that the Varsity cheerleaders and parents do not believe the JV squad should go on the trip. Apparently this has caused some animosity between the two groups of parents. They said the rumor was that I said no to the funding because the Varsity parents had asked me not to approve it. We ended with me saying that we had approved them to go on the trip but we could not use district money to fund it. If they raised all the money ($14,000+) and the coach wanted to go, I wouldn't prevent the trip. I don't believe they will be contacting the Board.

2. Counseling Ratios: Please find the chart of counselor to student ratio that I discussed last night. I obtained the information about each school from the SED website. Notice that Wayne's ratio of 231 students per counselor is the most generous of any Monroe County school.

3. Windmill Study: This is an ever evolving story. Last night I told you we had pushed Sustainable Energy Development's price down to $17,500 and that my only concern was whether we would get a good enough quality study to garner SED approval. This morning I received a call from our architect telling me he has two other concerns who would do the study for much less. He is sending their information to us. I want to look at who these other concerns are and see what Tom Nicholson knows about them (hope that is okay Tom). I'll try to keep you abreast of developments.

4. Board Goals: I enjoyed your discussion last night about the goals. The administration would be excited to implement any one of the three. I asked that you continue your discussions and be prepared to discuss and reach a decision in January.

5. CSEA: I met with CSEA this morning about the contract roll over. They were very anxious to here what you thought about the proposal. I told them that I was cautiously optimistic but you needed some time to think about it. They would like to move ahead with a vote the first week in January. I asked them not to move forward until after next Wednesday in case it turned out to be a problem for the Board. They agreed. If you have any concerns about the roll over or think I should tell them they shouldn't go ahead with discussing with their members, let me know by next Wednesday. Otherwise I'll tell them to proceed on their end, with the understanding that the Board will make no decision until later in January. Let me know.

6. Coaches vs. Cancer: As part of Taryn Smith's senior project she has brought the American Cancer Society's Coaches vs. Cancer Group to Wayne Central. Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. With the support of her basketball coach, Ms. Quick, Taryn has and is organizing many fundraising activities to help support her cause. On December 29th and 30th the girl's varsity team will be collecting donations from community members to support the American Cancer Society at the Midlakes Basketball Tournament. Look for additional information regarding Wayne Central's Coaches vs. Cancer activities and events.

7. Fake Bomb: There have been a couple of instances at our elementary school of boys making fake bombs and bringing them to school. They don't appear to have been pretending they were real bombs. They told their classmates they made fake bombs. The principal has dealt with the children, but in case someone asks, I thought you should know.

8. Monroe County League: Canandaigua was rejected by Monroe County in its bid to join the Monroe County League. They had to be voted in by a 75% margin and I believe the vote was 12-8. They are continuing discussions with the league who may once more consider them. They may also consider them for just football. Some Monroe County AD’s have asked our AD when Wayne will be applying.

9. Student Charity Events: I hesitate to try to name all the activities our students are involved in, for fear I will leave some out, but their efforts are so commendable that I want to mention them.
