Mr. Mattle
It is hard to believe that October is here already!
It seems that time really does
fly. I am enjoying getting to know all the faculty, s
    taff, parents and students at
Dalton Elementary. This is a very warm and welcoming
    building and I am delighted
to join such a wonderful school community. I love to w
alk in to the classrooms to
see the students engaged in lessons and trying their
best. It is easy to see that
the faculty and staff at Dalton are very focused on pro
    viding a top-notch educa-
    tional experience for your children.
I began my new job here in the middle of August at abo
ut the same time that the
front entrance construction started. I was a bit ap
prehensive as to how we could
develop a smooth process for people to get in and o
ut of the building during con-
struction. I soon found out that there was no need to
    worry, as everyone has
been very cooperative and accommodating. I want to
    thank the parents, students,
faculty, staff and community for their patience and wi
    llingness to change their
usual routine. As the year progresses, we will continue
    to have construction and
upgrades going on in the building. Your patience and
    understanding are greatly
    appreciated.
I believe that the parent-school partnership is ver
    y important to our students’
success. We have several events coming up that promot
    e that partnership. On
    October 22
    nd
, we will be hosting the school’s annual Open House.
    This is an oppor-
tunity to meet your child’s teachers and see the differ
    ent classes that they may
attend. While you are here, you will also be able to s
    ign up for parent confer-
ences, which will be held on November 24
    th
    and 25
    th
. I look forward to getting to
know all the students and families this year and ho
pe to see you at our Open
    House.

The children in Mrs. Forrester’s and Mrs. Macomber’s
    kindergarten were releasing monarch butterflies.
They fed them milkweed and watched them grow.
The children waited patiently as the caterpillars crawled
to the top of their cage, made a “J” and turned into
chrysalis. We were also very excited to watch them
hatch and see their wings grow. At the end of the day
the children walked outside and waved goodbye to
their beautiful friends. We wish all of our butterflies
the best of luck as they journey to Mexico.

The first graders in Mrs. Beachel’s class have enjo
    yed exploring their five
senses. They used their sense of smell to guess
what food items were in different containers and
used their sense of touch to guess what hidden item
    s
were. They had an apple- tasting test and charted
the results onto a bulletin board. After a vote, th
    ey
decided that they liked the yellow apples the best.
    The
green were a little sour! Students also experi-
mented with a sight station and a listening station
    . The
children had to use their sense of sight to remembe
    r
as many items in a pile after seeing it for only 10
    seconds and also guess what
was in a plastic film canister by shaking it to hea
r it. They all had lots of fun!

We have had a great start to second grade. We hope

the children have shared what is going on in the cl
    assrooms.
We are meeting new friends and working hard. Mrs.
    Burt is
our second grade helper, so if they men-
tion her name that is who it is. She
works in our classrooms daily during
    our reading centers.
Many of the children might have
shared that they have had lunch with
Mr. Wiggins. Mr. Wiggins allows the children to si
    gn up to
eat lunch with him. They can bring a friend. This
    provides
the children with a great social outlet. They all
    are eager to
    go.
    Please check your child’s home-
work folder each night. They need to
read each night and they may
have other assignments as well. Feel
free to call your child’s teacher with
any concerns you may have. We
are looking forward to a great year
