People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone." --Audrey Hepburn,Academy Award-winning actress, humanitarian

Board Agenda:

1. Building Tour: We will tour Freewill Elementary at 6:30. Please plan to meet in the Cafeteria to start the tour.

2. Freewill Musical Performance: Mr. Michael Walker, Freewill band teacher, will be leading two Freewill band ensembles in a short musical presentation for the board’s pleasure at the start of our meeting.

3. Freewill “O Ambassador’s Club”: Mrs. Jona Wright will be introducing Alex Balta who is seeking the board’s permission to start the “O Ambassador Club. This is a club that is inspired and supported by Oprah Winfrey and is recognized around the world. The purpose of the club is to raise funds for development projects overseas and increase awareness of global issues such as poverty, education, health and sustainable development. Generally we wouldn’t need Board approval to begin a club but since this is our first nationally affiliated club I thought it should have both your and my blessing.

4. 2008-09 Budget Discussion – Instructional Priorities: We will begin our budget discussions with the instructional priorities. Mrs. Cox will review our long term commitment to excellence goals to make sure you want us to continue to use them as our basis for program and budget development.

5. Connect Ed: We have completed our test of Connect Ed and are now operational. I will provide you with an overview of the program.

6. Financial Update: Mr. Atseff will provide his monthly revenue and appropriation status report to you as red and green handouts at the meeting as requested.

7. Student Representative: The student representative for this meeting is Michelle Vendel. Michelle was here last year and is a sophomore this year.

8. Business Items: We will have personnel and CSE action. On the Consensus agenda we have budget transfers and the approval of the single audit report which you will receive in the mail. I recommend approval of each item.

Board Letter:

1. HS incident: On Thursday, at appx.11:30 a.m. there was an incident in the HS cafeteria. A student was asked into the hallway by Trooper Chapman. While speaking to him, the student became confrontational with the trooper, using vulgar language and stormed back into the cafeteria stating he was going to “beat up another student.” Trooper Chapman asked the student to stop several times, but the student did not. Trooper Chapman followed the student back into the cafeteria, where he told the student to put his hands behind his back. The student then pushed away on the trooper, at which time Trooper Chapman physically restrained the student and handcuffed him. This event got the cafeteria students worked up. Mrs. Armitage was in the cafeteria and realized things were getting out of hand, yelled out the door to a hall monitor to get “people” and she ran to the office. Mrs. Muir ran down to the district office where Administrative Council was in progress and all the administrators were in attendance. The student’s brother was in the cafeteria and he had to be restrained by other students and staff members. The situation remained in check. I am sure there will be a lot of chatter about this incident, so I wanted to provide you with details. Both the student and his brother are being brought to a superintendent’s hearing and one of the boys is being brought up on criminal charges by Trooper Chapman.
3.   Sales Tax Update: On December 17 Judge Fisher signed the Order and Judgment that implements his decision regarding the Monroe County sales tax issue. Attorneys representing the school districts filed the Notice of Appeal on the 19th. The next steps to complete the appeal include having the County agree on the documents that go into the Record on Appeal, preparing an appellate Brief and preparing a motion to the Appellate Division asking them to "expedite" the appeal. Our attorney believes that appeals filed now would be heard at oral argument in May or later.
4. 200th Win: Varsity wrestling coach Scott Freischlag earned his 200th win at our Christmas break. Scott is the only current coach with 200 wins. Some of you "old timers" may be able to let us know of previous 200 club members.

5. Administrative Internship Proposal: Assistant Student Services Director, Tina Cieplinski has completed her administrative program and is ready for her internship. Tina is part of a program we began a few years ago to grow some of our own administrators. The proposal was approved by administrative council earlier this week and will be coming to you at a future Board meeting.
6. Past Graduate Article: I am attaching an article on a past graduate, Joe Geiger who is doing some very interesting work as part of an engineering team that recently traveled to Hawaii.

RE:                   Meeting Minutes

DATE: December 18, 2007

Old Business
Riley Wheaton and I went through the chemical cabinet in the middle school basement. We inventoried and categorized the chemicals for disposal. I will be transporting them to the Monroe County Hazardous Waste Facility in Henrietta.

I met with Mark Callahan and Rob Chapman about the ‘Homeland Security’ booklet. We discussed the weapons threat section for Freewill. Mark checked with the Greece School District security personnel, who have a similar building on their campus. They suggested that we identify several “safe rooms”, which could be locked from the inside, in several areas of the building. We will be updating that section of the booklet for Freewill and then sending out new booklets for the buildings that need them.

New Business
There was a student in the new gym at the high school that had an HVAC diffuser fall on him during a gym class volleyball game. The safety chain that prevents the diffuser from falling broke after being struck by the volleyball. There were only minor injuries and the student was sent down to see the nurse. I had heavier safety chains installed, in addition to the existing chains, on all of the diffusers in that gym. The other buildings were also checked.

I received a memo from BOCES Health & Safety regarding the commissioner’s school recycling mandate. Our district has been recycling for over 15 years. In that time, between recycling and savings in garbage collection, we have generated almost $100,000.

I informed the group that we are currently updating all MSDS books in the buildings.

We had a problem with squirrels above the ceiling of the library at OE. It seems the squirrels also raised havoc in the library office. The maintenance crew placed “have a heart” traps above the ceiling and caught two of the critters.

Pat Griswold said that the students are getting slivers from the platforms on the playground. I will be purchasing compost decking to cover the platforms.
