Board Letter:

1. Kindergarten Teacher: Earlier this year we hired a long term sub (LTS) for a kindergarten teacher at Freewill who is beginning a one year maternity leave. This person had filled in as an LTS in another position last year. That LTS called Jona yesterday to say she had taken another position. I consider it unprofessional to leave those children at such a late date and will hold her to 30 days. Luckily it is an elementary position and we should be able to fill it from one of our 400 applications. Mrs. Wright will interview today and tomorrow in order to have someone to me over the weekend. Provided we have an acceptable person on Tuesday, I will release the LTS.

2. SRO: I learned today from our SRO, Trooper Smith, that the department is down to two candidates for her position. Kim is expected to be with us until mid-late September and then the new person will take over.

3. Dennis Landry: I received a phone call from Dennis Landry last night. He was the gentleman who was very angry at us a year ago about letting a technology teacher go. He had come to a number of Board meetings. He wanted to compliment Mr. Blankenberg on his help in installing the soccer dugouts. He said Mr. Blankenberg stayed very late with him to get the work done. We had a nice conversation and I have hired him to do some buffing work on my Jaguar. You do need to see the dug outs as he did a great job.

4. Open Houses: We have had a number of welcome back events at the various schools. I think it is a tribute to our teachers that they volunteer to come in during the summer to meet with their students and parents. Many districts would have “union” concerns about doing this. We really only have one building in which that is ever an issue.

5. Opening Day: We are in excellent shape for opening day. The buildings look great thanks to some awesome work by our custodial staff. This is the first labor day weekend we haven’t had to have people in to finish getting things ready. It feels really good to be all set to go.

6. State Audits: We hadn’t heard much lately about the State audits. Then Monday I learned that both North Rose and Red Creek have received letters that they will soon have a visit from the State. The State is still looking very closely at cell phone use, particularly school phones used for personal calls. We eliminated all district paid cell phones a couple of years ago because of similar concerns so we should be in excellent shape in that area. Our internal audit has been done and is being written up. We are anxious to get a copy to see what areas do need tightening.

7. Student Accident: 9th grade student Jessica Tallinger and 6th grade student Phillip Tallinger were in a very serious car accident on Wednesday on 104 and 350. Bob Armocida spoke to their mom Thursday morning and Jessica and Phillip will most likely not be back to school for a while. As of Thursday, we did not have the details of the injuries that occurred.
