Final Project Options

Final Project Options

Directions: Choose one of the following options for your final project. You will be required to present your project to the class in a 2-3 minute presentation.

Project due date: _________________

1.  Write and perform a scene in which George, Candy, and Crooks complete their plans for buying a small piece of land. Include information about the role and responsibilities of each man. Add comments about the loss of Lennie and their departure from the ranch. You should also include each character’s view of the future. Each character must speak as well.

2.  Create a travel brochure and commercial introducing a tourist/newcomer to the natural beauty of the area around Soledad, CA. Stress details about the Gabilan Mountains and the Salinas River. Use your book for details. Be specific. There is also a great deal of helpful information on the internet.

3.  Create a dramatic monologue and collage representing one of the characters from the novel. Your monologue must be a minimum of one page (handwritten or double-spaced if typed).

4.  Comic Strip – Create a comic strip that illustrates two important scenes from the novel. If you choose this option, please come see me for additional instructions.

5.  Give a presentation, with visual aids, about the Great Depression and its impact on the area Steinbeck was from. You should also include details about how this even impacted the entire nation. In addition to your presentation, you are required to write a two page (min.) research report of your findings.

6.  Create a puppet show and act out two scenes from the novel. You must write a script and present your show to the class.

7.  Take on the persona of two characters from the novel. These two characters will have chosen to keep in touch after the death of Lennie. You must write 2 letters each (4 total) that are exchanges that pen pals might have.

8.  Research some aspect of the 1930s and show how the setting influences the attitude and actions of the characters and events in the novel Of Mice and Men. Please go to http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/schools/wjhs/mediactr/englishpathfinder/ofmiceandmen/ommindex.htm for the instructions for this task. If you choose to do this task, please see me for additional information and guidance.

9.  Epilogue – Write an epilogue (a concluding part added to a literary work) in which you explain – using whatever tense and tone the author did – what happened to the character(s) next.

10.  Censorship Defense – Of Mice and Men has been frequently challenged by special interest groups. These groups often feel that this novel is inappropriate for high school students to read because of foul language, violence, and the presentation of stereotypical viewpoints. You must decide whether you agree or disagree with this argument and write a letter to the editor of a newspaper defending your opinion of this issue. You must use specific details from the book and information you find about censorship to support your opinion.
