“PARADOXICAL COMMANDMENTS OF LEADERS”

1. People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centered. Love them anyway.
2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
3. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

4.  The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

5.  Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
6.  The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest minds. Think big anyway.
7.  People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

8.  What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
9.  People who really need help may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway.
10.  Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

Greetings from Wayne Central. Below are a few items of interest.

Board Letter:

1. Paradoxical Commandments of Leaders: I have kept the above quote on my bulletin board for many years and have often used it to counsel others. It was helpful to reread for myself this morning. Thanks for your constant support.

2. School Violence Report: There has been a bit of news in the paper about mistakes school have made in the required violent incident report. It has been stated that a number of districts have underreported. The commissioner has indicated he will be releasing a full report on this for all schools. I am confident of our data though I must say that the reporting system has many flaws. Some of the definitions for incidents were lifted directly out of the criminal justice world and do not really translate to school settings. I’ve listed three situations below to give you an idea of some of the problems that have occurred across the state.

§ Auditors reclassified throwing a snowball, throwing a garbage can (not at anyone), and pushing a desk into another student as reckless endangerment with a weapon. I would guess that when our parents read of a “weapons incident”, they think of knives, guns and explosives, not snowballs, trash cans, or desks.

§ A student on a bus “mooned” a pedestrian; this was reclassified by the auditors as an incident of sexual abuse. Again, I think the category invites ideas more disturbing than what actually transpired.

§ Confusion persists over how to report incidents involving more than one student. Districts reported them as one incident involving multiple students but claim they were advised by auditors that the involvement by each individual student should be counted as an incident (i.e., one fight involving five students should count as five incidents).

2. Yearbook: Mr. Siracuse continues to work with parents about errors with the yearbook. I am pleased with the way he has attacked this head on, not making excuses for the quality. It is a difficult situation because of the permanence of the book. Next year has to be much better.

3. Board Meetings: We will be sending a modified Board meeting schedule to you. In reviewing the schedule it was noted that there are too many single month meetings in the fall and we need to make an addition in order to get the job done.

4. Public Comment Questions: I don’t see a problem answering Mr. Collins questions though I asked Wayne VanderByl to do a little research to make sure we are legally correct. Mr. Landry’s questions still appear to be personnel related. Mr. Wyse gave him the only answer possible at our last meeting. I will work with our Board president to shift through this one.

5. Greg Atseff: Greg appears to be doing better. His doctor said he will release him to go back to work after their visit on Wednesday. It has been a bit hectic here without him.

6. Reconciliation of Payroll: I have been meeting frequently with our business department in order to provide oversight and direction to the operations. This week I learned from Mrs. Warner, our payroll clerk, that due to the new program we are using, she has not been able to reconcile our computer data to our payroll bank statements. I have no reason to believe there are errors but this troubles me. I am contacting the software company to have them meet with us about this.

7. Senator Nozzolio Visit: Senator Nozzolio visited our school on Friday from 11:00 – 1:00 and spoke with our Government Classes in the Performing Arts Center. It was a short notice visit but a nice opportunity for our students to be able to interact with a member of the legislature.

8. Gym Floor: Mr. Atseff and Mr. Miller would like to refinish the new gym floor to match the one recently completed in the original gym. They tell me we have never refinished the floor since it was installed. I have enclosed a memo for your review. I am recommending this work be done this summer.

9. Hank Moshano Letter: Attached is a letter from a retiree. For many of us who are not long time residents, Mr. Moshano spent many years as the OP Principal and also did a stint as the Superintendent of Schools (as an interim I believe). His wife, June was a teacher at OP throughout her career as well. They were residents of the district for many, many years and raised their family here.

10. Track State Competitions: Congratulations to Jenna Darron and Krystal Lang who have won Section V competitions and are competing in State Track and Field competitions this weekend. Jenna will be running in the 200 meter race and Krystal will be competing in the pole vault. Good luck to them. The boys track and field athletes did well in Section V competitions, but none will advance to States. Several of our student Track & Field athletes will compete in the Empire State Games on June 17 at Aquinas High School.

RE:    Gym Floor

DATE:  June 9, 2006

The district had requested a price from Archie Donaghue, the flooring subcontractor from the capitol project to add the same eagle logo to the new gym floor that was installed in the old gym during the project. That cost came in at $2600. We then requested a price to have the entire floor redone. That price came in at $18,000. Resurfacing the entire floor will entail stripping, sanding, relining and refinishing the floor with the same new eagle logo at center court. The new gym floor has not been stripped down and sanded in my 9+ years at Wayne. Doing this work will make it look as great as the old one does now and both floors will have the new logo at center court. It is my recommendation that we move forward with this proposal.
