“The clash of ideas is the sound of freedom."            --Lady Bird Johnson
Former first lady of the U.S.

Greetings from Wayne Central. Below are a few items of interest.

Board Agenda:
1. Executive Session: The Board only will be meeting in executive session to discuss my employment. I believe John has spoken to most of you ahead of time. I believe he will be contacting the remainder of the Board over the next few days.

2. Erik Larson Presentation: Erik will be presenting his Mill Creek project to the Board. He last reported to you on his progress four years ago when he was in 8th grade. You will recall from the budget presentation the awards he has won for his study. We will be presenting him with a plaque for his achievement.

3. Board/Administrative retreat workshop: We need to decide on a date to complete our summer goal setting session. The Administrators will have their retreat later in the summer to develop plans based on the goals established. I am going to suggest either one day during the final week of June or the 10-14th of July. We would like to plan early so that we have time to complete plans for September. We also need to decide if we want an after work session with dinner, such as last year or if we want a full day as was done a few years ago.

4. Special Olympics: We are hosting a Special Olympics meet on the Friday after our board meetng. Marc Blankenberg has been the principal organizer of the program and will share details with you. If you have time on May 26, you should consider coming.

5. Financial report: Greg will be giving the financial report he didn’t do last month. I believe this will happen but I sent him home earlier this week and he has been home since.

Board Letter:

1. Accident: The young boy that was struck by our vehicle was released from the hospital on Wednesday (May 17). News of his condition is not readily available to us so we are limited to the standard news release information. As of Monday, his condition was listed as guarded. We did receive a call from the discharge personnel at Strong Hospital seeking information on our insurance company and claim before they would release the child. Fred had all the information the hospital was looking for. Kevin was back the Friday following the accident. He is doing ok. He has not driven a school vehicle since his return, by his choice, not district policy. So far, we just have not needed him to do so. However, before Kevin would be put back behind the wheel of any school vehicles, Fred would have Kevin drive with him and go through a defensive driving review session. This would allow everyone to achieve a comfort level and further document safe driving practices for the district.

2. Greg Update: Greg has returned to work for some half days. The dizziness and woozy feeling persists. He had an MRI last week however the results are inconclusive. We are all concerned about him.

3. School Board Vote: I know I join all of you in our excitement over the passing of the budget. I think this is a good sign of confidence in the positive things we are doing in this district and how far we have come over the past 5 years. In light of a recent “controversy” that I am sure accounted for several no votes, I believe the “yes” margin would have been larger still. I would also like to extend my sincere congratulations to our newest elected board members: John, Scott and Susan. I am looking forward to working with you for the next three years.

4. Memorial Day Observances: Some of the schools will be having their Memorial Day activities, which you are welcome to attend. The middle school will have an assembly at 8:00 a.m. on the 26th, OE will have a brief presentation as part of their Smile Day assembly on the 26th at2:00 p.m., FE will have an assembly at 9:00 a.m. on the 26th. Ontario Parks will have their sunset Memorial Service on Monday evening (May 29) at 7:30 at Memorial Point at Bear Creek Harbor and the American Legion will host the traditional Memorial Day Parade on Tuesday, May 30 (actual Memorial Day) from OE to the American Legion Post.

5. Board Meeting Schedule 2006-07:    For initial planning, I would like to hear from you regarding the board meeting schedule for next year. If there are any major changes that we need to consider, I would need to hear about that now so we can start gathering information for the district calendar. (ie: stay with Thursday evenings, ok with the # of meetings).

6. School Bus Incident: On Thursday bus driver Leslie Ford was informed by students that kids were smoking marijuana on her 4:00 bus run. Leslie stopped the bus and walked to the back and confirmed the smell of what she believed to be marijuana smoke as well. She radioed into the bus garage and the police were contacted. The Troopers caught up with the bus on Trimble Road. The Trooper boarded the bus and began to question students. There were OP, OE, MS and HS students on the bus. The OE/OP students were removed and put on another bus to continue their route home as were any HS/MS students that were not involved. The two students that are suspected are one middle school girl and one high school boy. The trooper conducted a search of the bus and found a pipe stuffed in a tear in the bus seat. Parents of all the detained students were called. Later, a stash of a substance presumed to be marijuana was found in the bus/seat by our mechanic after the bus returned to the garage. Additional information is coming forth from witnesses. At this time, the HS student has been suspended and is likely to be sent to a superintendent’s hearing. The investigation regarding the MS student is ongoing, but a suspension/superintendent’s hearing is likely there as well. OP and OE principals have been notified of the incident so they are informed.

7. ASI Interviews: The first round of interviews for the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction are scheduled to begin on May 24. They received 28 applications and anticipate interviewing 7 people in the first round. The search timeline was given to you at the last Board meeting and is expected to proceed as outlined.

8. NYSSBA Annual Convention: Please be thinking of how you would like to proceed with the NYSSBA convention registrations. Registration opens on June 1. I will need to know how many rooms to book and how many nights you plan on staying (conference runs from October 26-29). We are going to try to get the paperwork processed on the first day registration opens to see if we can get into the Sheraton Towers.

9. Graduation Ceremonies: The high school needs to know which members of the Board of Education will be attending graduation and your height. Please respond as soon as possible so proper arrangements can be made. Commencement exercises will be on Friday, June 23 at 7:00 p.m. at FLCC Performing Arts Center (presuming all stays on track at FLCC).

10. Wayne County Mail Editorial: Attached is a letter that appeared in the WCM this week.
