Activity: Earth’s Relative size

1. Create a table defining the thicknesses of the Earth’s interior from the ESRT and text pg 73.
                     calculated
Layer        starting depth (km) ending depth depth (km)
Crust

Mantle

Outer Core

Inner Core

2. Carry out ratio calculations to create a scale model of the earth using 1cm = 120km.

Show ratio calculations for each layer. Label units.

Crust     Mantle     Outer Core    Inner Core

3. Draw a continuous line on the left side of the paper towards the right to symbolize each layer above. Use a different color for each layer.
 a) Clearly label the name of each layer on your diagram
b). Identify each layer as being solid liquid
 c) Identify the approximate starting density and ending density for each layer
 d) Label the starting /ending temperature and starting/ending pressure ranges for      each layer.

4. Make sure each group member’s name appears on the model.
