Greetings from Wayne Central. Below are a few items of interest.

BOARD LETTER

BOARD LETTER

1. Building Project Tour: The attendance at the High School tour was light with about 40 people taking advantage of the tour. Those who did participate seemed genuinely interested and enthusiastic about the prospects for our students.

2. Wayne Central Flag Design: I am attaching a mock up of the district flag that is being created and donated by one of our athletic apparel suppliers and a district resident. It will fly out front on the third flagpole, next to the New York State flag and under the flag of the United States. As you can see, it matches our pin and the logo that will be imbedded in the floor of our new addition.

3.   Rotary Dictionary Presentation: This afternoon the FE 3rd graders were given dictionary’s from the Ontario-Walworth Rotary. This program began a few years ago and targets each 3rd grade class.

4.   Parent complaint: Enclosed is a memo with additional information regarding a parent complaint you heard last night. I will be sending the parent a letter.

5.   High School Prom: Our prom will be next Friday night. We have planned two events to minimize student drinking and to keep our children safe. On Wednesday the State police will be doing a program for prom goers on the effects of drinking. Although I have not seen the program I have been told it is very good. The high school administration has asked to give breathalyzer tests to each student as they enter the prom. I was hesitant at first but have agreed to authorize them to do so. Students will be informed ahead of time that they will be tested. I believe that will be a strong deterrent to anyone considering drinking. We will still worry about what they may do after they leave the prom, but at least I know they will be safe up to that point. You may get some parent complaints, but if we save just one life I believe it is worth the complaints.

6. Weekend Events: As you know, last weekend we had many events going on. Our MS Musical “Annie” was a fantastic show that highlighted the tremendous talent we have in our schools. From the acting, dancing and singing to the pit band and student run technical operations, the show was wonderful. Our MS/HS Science Olympiad Team finished 5th in the state out of 38 regional winners across the state. They did a tremendous job as well. Each year we raise the bar and make the competitions more and more difficult. The MS/HS Technology Student Association Team competed in Oswego and had a photo finish for first place. We have not heard yet if they were awarded the first place standing in NYS or second. They took 30 first place ribbons, more than any other school. They are hopefully going to Chicago for the National Competitions. We are very proud of all these students.

Re:   Parent Issue
Last night in executive session, you requested some additional information regarding the parental complaint about how the Middle School was dealing with a student. I have included below a list of issues we have dealt with during the first half of this year. The person has been involved with probation in the past but is not at this time. I have tried to delete any information that specifies who the child is as this is of course confidential information.

date teacher incident discipline
9/14 Waring inappropriate behavior in class and skipping teacher’s detention parent phone call
9/27 shaffer poked a student with a pen detention and parent phone call
9/27 Gurnett stealing in the cafeteria parent phone call, ISS, detention
10/4 Nagel tried to stab student with pen. Tried to poke another student in the eye ISS
10/18 Wing refused to do work parent contact. Mom says this is just Charlie
10/26 Waring reading comics when asked to read article detention
11/16 Nagel can not get student to complete any work stay with teacher after school
12/8 Nagel no pencils to class, distracting other students during test, making noises, ripping up quiz detention

12/10 Nagel swinging a piece of wood at another student threatening to hit her. refused to give wood to teacher ISS
12/15 LaBarge taking things from other students, making and throwing paper airplanes detention
1/14 Gauthier throwing eraser at another student, harassing another student ISS

There are 12 more incidents however, I think you get the picture of what we are dealing with. Mr. Shaffer does not believe the parent has brought his complaints to Mr. Armocida, so I will send him a letter asking him to begin there. If he is not satisfied with Mr. Armocida he can then meet with me and finally with the Board of Education.
