    PSYCHOLOGY 101 - LEARNING-REVIEW
PART I OF TEST - SHORT ANSWER

TAKE HOME PORTION OF LEARNING TEST:

    1) You have been hired by a company to design a commercial that will get viewers to prefer their brand of soap over equally popular bars. Consumer researchers have demonstrated that paring pleasant music with pictures of a product can lead us to prefer that product even when competing products are otherwise basically the same. How could you use music to get viewers to prefer your company’s bar over the competing bar of soap? When would you play what kind of music?

    2) You have decided to enter your baby sister in a local baby beauty contest sponsored by Gerber Baby Food Company. Your baby sister wins the local contest and will now continue to the national contest, which will be televised. You have been told that you are to slowly stroll the baby across the stage, and then pause at the end, facing the camera, while the announcer says, “will THIS be the new Gerber baby?” You decide you want to have your baby sister do something special as the camera comes close and the announcer finishes with, “…Gerber baby?” Given that she’s a baby, she really can’t do much. So you decide to apply the principles of classical conditioning that you have learned in your introductory psychology class. You remember that blinking is a baby’s natural reaction to a puff of air blown in her eyes. Describe the procedure you would use to have you sister blink in the camera just as the announcer says, “…Gerber baby?”

    3) How would you get a baby to say “Mama” without waiting for him/her to say the entire word in order to reinforce him/her?
