Day 1:
 
Complete your Dream Career Essay, depending on teacher comments on earlier draft. Final draft due at start of next class.
 
Day 2:
For Deal’s “Antaeus,” Elements, 111-117, read story aloud, use 117-118 for discussion of plot, characterization, theme. Students may expect a quiz. Depending on progress, we will discuss the story on days 2 or 3.
 
Day 3:
We may continue discussion of “Antaeus,” as needed.
 
Students brainstorm ideas for essay: everyone has a close friend at one time or another. In a well-written essay of about 200 words, show how you or your friend proved the friendship. Make sure that you explain in words why your or your friend acted as you did. Due start of day 1 of next week for class workshop. [Students need to know that these essays will be public.]

Day 1:
Read Fink, 205-211, asking how the past shapes a person.
Day 2:
After reading Manegold, write an essay responding to 158, ôWriting Assignmentö #2. You will be passing this essay among your classmates.
Day 3:
Exchange essay drafts, using the same script as earlier.

As homework, students conduct research for persuasive speeches (4-6 minutes, graded).

Begin the Science Fiction Unit, with students listing books or movies that they think fit into the genre; generate a working definition of sci fi.
Start to view It: the Creature from Beyond as sci fi and as literature generally. Use a Venn diagram or T chart to relate this creaky origin of Aliens to other literature (look for plot, characterization, foreshadowing, atmosphere. . . .).
First, just view the movie. Then play it again for observation and discussion of plot, characterization, foreshadowing, atmosphere. . ..
