“Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it - - but sail we must, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.”
- - Oliver Wendell Holmes
Greetings from Wayne Central School District. Below are some items of interest.
Newsletter:
1.
| Ginna Drill – On Tuesday we conducted our annual Ginna Drill. The drill went off very well. The Ontario Elementary and primary schools were evacuated in a very efficient time: OP – 22 minutes, OE – 22 minutes, MS – 36 minutes, HS – 33 minutes, FE – 61 minutes. Freewill always takes the longest because we are assisted by Gananda and Penfield School Districts. We had a record number of our own bus drivers report for the drill.

2.
| Field Trip Request – I have a request for a group from Freewill to go to the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls, Canada. The details are attached. I have been invited to go as one of the chaperones.

4.
| HS Band Competition – The Wayne High School Band traveled to Annapolis, Maryland last week for a band competition. They received a “Superior” rating – the highest possible and a multitude of compliments on student behavior. Congratulations to Mike Lester and the band members on a fine job.
|
5.
| Science Olympiad Team – The National competition is May 20-23. Attached is the itinerary and cost breakdown.
|
6.
| Parent Concern - Also at the Board meeting a parent voiced a concern about chemistry books. Mr. Spring once again investigated the situation. His email to me is attached.
|
7.
| Contractor Concern - At our recent Board meeting a contractor expressed concerned about the wording of the bids. The addendum the followed the contract has the “or comparable hardware” that he was asking about

Proposal for field trip for Team C to Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory, Niagara Falls, Canada
Third graders study the life cycle of a butterfly as part of their science curriculum. Students will have “hands-on” experience “raising” painted lady butterflies and doing accompanying activities to reinforce the concept of the natural, predictable life cycle at school. We would like to extend and enrich this experience by taking advantage of a unique resource available to us in this area, i.e., the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls, Canada.
We have contacted the conservatory to determine that there is an age-appropriate program available to third graders along with a tour of the building. The cost is $7.02 per student and $11.70 per adult (Canadian).
One adult for every ten children is free. A tentative booking has been made for Wednesday, June 9, 2004. We plan on asking the Freewill Parent Group to partially fund this trip. We would use Wayne Central buses for transportation (and have tentatively cleared the date with transportation).
We have contacted the customs office at Queenston Bridge, who have informed us that participants will need a notarized copy of their birth certificates and a signed permission slip which specifically states that the parents give their child permission to cross the border into Canada. (See enclosed proposed permission slip.) Would it be possible for a district notary to notarize copies of birth certificates that parents would send in? Adults (including parent chaperones, teachers and bus drivers) need either a birth certificate and photo ID or passport.
In order to have adequate time for travel and customs, and to make the most of the trip, we propose to ask parents to bring their children to Freewill early for an 8:00 am departure. (We’ve been advised to plan on 2 hours for travel and at least one hour to go through customs.) We would have a picnic lunch in the park in Canada, (participants will be asked to bring bag lunches), possibly view the falls, and proceed to the Butterfly Conservatory for programs scheduled at 1:20 and 2:00. The programs would end at approximately 2:40, at which time we would board the buses for the return trip. We anticipate returning to Freewill at approximately 6:00. We will ask parents to pick up their children then.
We understand that the superintendent would reserve the right to cancel the trip if international conditions warrant it.
PARENT PERMISSION FOR A SCHOOL DAY FIELD TRIP

Parents are responsible for bringing students to Freewill on June 9 by 7:45am, and must pick them up by 6:00 pm.
Students must bring a morning snack and their own bagged lunch in a disposable container. Glass containers of any sort are not allowed. Neither are carbonated drinks.
Admission to the conservatory will be partially underwritten by the Parents’ Group. Each student is asked to contribute $4.00 toward admission and an afternoon snack.
Each student will also need a copy of his/her birth certificate. Please send that document in with this permission slip and payment. (Please do not send original copies of birth certificates.)
Will your child require medication to be taken while on the field trip? Yes ___ No ___
If “yes”, please contact the school nurse at once so appropriate and timely arrangements may be made with you for the proper handling and administration of your child’s medication during the field trip.
I understand that all school policies, regulations, and rules will be in effect and will apply to my child for the duration of the field trip.

HIGH SCHOOL BAND TRIP
ON APRIL 30, MAY 1,2 AND 3, THE WAYNE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL BAND ATTENDED THE "CLASSIC MUSIC FESTIVAL" WHICH TOOK PLACE IN ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND.
THE BAND PERFORMED ON SATURDAY MORNING. THEY PERFORMED THE BRITISH 8TH MARCH BY ZO ELLIOT, THE WEST HIGHLAND SOJOURN BY ROBERT SHELDON, AND RALPH VAUGH WILLIAMS FOLKSONG SUITE.
THE RANKINGS FOR EACH GROUP WENT LIKE THIS: SUPERIOR, OUTSTANDING /EXCELLENT OR GOOD. THAT NIGHT THERE WAS AN AWARDS BANQUET, OUR BAND RECEIVED A "SUPERIOR" RATING. THE JUDGE WHO HANDED ME THE AWARD (WHO WAS ALSO THE CONDUCTOR FOR THE NAVY BAND) SHOOK MY HAND AND SAID "THANK YOU FOR BRINGING YOUR BAND TO THE FESTIVAL, THEY WERE AN INSPIRATION FOR US". AN OUTSTANDING COMPLIMENT TO OUR BAND STUDENTS.
THE NEXT DAY WE WENT TO KINGS DOMINION AMUSEMENT PARK, AND MONDAY TO THE SMITHSONIAN IN WASHINGTON D.C.
EVERY PLACE WE WERE, FROM THE HOTEL, TO THE RESTAURANTS, TO THE AMUSEMENT PARK, “EVERYONE” RAVED ABOUT WHAT A GREAT GROUP OF KIDS WE HAD. COURTEOUS, KIND, THOUGHTFUL, RESPECTFUL ETC. "BRING THEM BACK AGAIN” THE GUIDE PROVIDED BY THE FESTIVAL COMPANY SAID TO ME AS WE LEFT… "GREAT GROUP OF KIDS. THANKS AGAIN FOR COMING.”
IT WAS A SUCCESSFUL TRIP.
MIKE LESTER
Michael,
I spoke with Pat this morning. She assures me that her text is a collection of materials that she has put together over the years because she has not yet found a textbook that can do it better.
She also uses a review book for kids on an as needed basis... she facilitates student purchases of these and has some in her classroom for students to borrow. She does not have a class set (she has 7), nor does she do whole class assignments or instruction from them.
She did purchase these review books out of her own pocket. I asked her, and received the receipt, for these books. I told her that the district would purchase consumable materials of that nature. I will make arrangements for her to be reimbursed for those class copies.
Additionally, in an effort to aid the situation, Pat had given a copy of the review book to Ann's daughter, thinking that that would assuage her. She also has another review book that she thinks would be helpful to this students because of her particular difficulties in Chemistry... Pat is planning on letting the student borrow that one.
I am convinced that Pat is following district policy, and doing everything that we hope teachers would do in this regard.
