“ For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us.”

- - John Winthrop

Greetings from Wayne Central School District. Below are some items of interest.

Board Meeting:

1. High School Eligibility: I have enclosed a letter that went out to parents in February. Third quarter report cards will be coming out shortly. Students failing 1 or 2 courses will be placed on probation and must fill out an academic contract. Students failing 3 or more classes will not be able to participate in a number of events which include, talent show, senior trip or the Prom. We have been stressing this to parents and students however there will still be some who will appear surprised by the news.

2. State Budget: State Legislators are beginning to acknowledge what the rest of us knew; that the budget will be late again this year. Pundits are now suggesting a mid-May budget is probable. I would not bank on that either.

3. Legislative Breakfast: Lori will be calling to verify those of you who will be attending the breakfast on April 3. We can meet at the DO and ride down together if you would like.

4. Atlantic Energy: I hope you found the information in the Atlantic Energy presentation helpful. The tour was certainly interesting. Please send me any questions you may have regarding the proposal. I will get answers for you so we can arrive at a decision in April.

5. Spring Sports: Spring sports are scheduled to begin April 1st. If we hadn’t gotten our recent snowstorm we might have been able to start on time. I am not sure when we will be able to hold the first event but I guarantee it will be sooner than the passage of the State budget.

6. NYS Report Cards: The state report cards were released in mid March. They are enclosed along with a powerpoint presentation that will be made at a future board meeting. This report includes data sorted by schools, district wide and in comparison to similar schools in New York State. Please review the report and let me know if you have any questions. I will be happy to discuss it with you.

7. MS Car Theft: On Wednesday, March 24 a staff member’s car was stolen from the MS parking lot sometime between 7:30 and 10:00 a.m. Police recovered the car at 4:00 a.m. at a known drug-house in Rochester. I believe the vehicle was unlocked when stolen. The car was parked very near the maintenance building, and it is rather shocking that persons would carry out a car theft in broad daylight, in a busy location. I do not believe the police have any leads. I notified all staff of this incident and encouraged extra caution and awareness in the parking lots. I will let you know if I get any additional information.

8. Sex Offender: We have learned of a registered sex offender that has recently moved into our school district. You may have seen the article in The Times providing detailed information including his name and address. While the address is Williamson, he lives within the Wayne Central School District. Jan Bulman, age 42, lives at 2704 Ridge Road, Williamson. He was convicted of a Class D Felony in March 2000 for the sexual abuse of a 9-year-old girl and served a shortened prison sentence. The details of this incident indicate that he was a stranger to the child, using coercion and threatening the child with a knife. He is classified as a high-risk release sexual predator, meaning that he is a high risk to the community, specifically to children as a repeat offender. I will be mailing out a letter informing parents of this matter.

9. HS Student Injury: A high school student, Brandon Sullivan was injured today in technology class. A screwdriver he was working with slipped and went into the palm of his hand. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital (with the screwdriver still impaled). Mrs. Sgabellone, HS Nurse, attended to the student until the ambulance arrived. His mother met him at school and went with him to the hospital.

Dear Parents:

We are sending this letter as a reminder of our school’s eligibility policy with regards to co-curricular activities. With a number of events occurring in the Spring that are related to eligibility we wanted to make sure that everyone is aware of the policy as it is printed in our student handbook.

The third marking period will be ending on Friday, March 26, 2004. This is a change from what is printed on the school calendar. If a student is failing three or more classes at this time they will not be eligible to participate in the talent show, attend the Prom, the Senior Trip or the Senior Banquet. Students who are failing 1 or 2 classes will be placed on academic probation and must fill out an academic contract. The eligibility policy affects athletics as well.

These are all important events in our students’ lives. Please encourage your students to be aware of their academic progress and seek the necessary help from teachers to ensure that they are academically successful. Our hope is that all students will meet the necessary academic requirements in order to be eligible for these events.

If we can be of further assistance or answer any questions please fell free to contact us at 524-0226.

Sincerely,

Holly Armitage, Assistant Principal
