    1. Students prepare articles for second edition by Mar 19. Editors compose first edition of newspaper. Students turn in time-sheets to track use of time by end of week.

    Mar 15-19: Review of Tone (150-157). In addition to our other approaches to lit., determine and explain the effect of tone on:
    “Clean, Well-Lighted Place,” 158-161
    “Barn Burning,” 162-175; 193-194
    “First Confession,” 719-725.
     
    Write essay: “Writing Assignment,” 194, “Consider a short story. . . .” You must provide at least six (6) quotations or examples from throughout the story in your essay.

    All classes (but see below):
    Day 1: Students take a quiz on the first 8 chapters of The River; explain orally their answers to our worksheet on chapters 1-8; brainstorm approaches and information for the essay on 1-8; work further on the essay.
    Day 2: At the start of the period, students turn in the essay on chapters 1-8. Learn 3 new vocab items (aerobic bacteria, aerosols, anaerobic bacteria); continue reading The River.
    Day 3: Finish reading 9-15.
    Blocks 2, 6, and 8, in addition to working on The River, on Day 3 (day C): hear lesson taught by a senior.

    You will split your time in making sure that you are succeeding with English 9 class work and in working with the New York State Drivers Manual. We will use the Internet to test your work with the manual.
