"Don't be afraid to take a big step. You can't cross a chasm in two small jumps."        - - David Lloyd George

Greetings from Wayne Central School District. Below are some items of interest.

Board Meeting:

1. Tour of School- Freewill principal, Kim Saxby will give us a tour of Freewill Elementary at 6:30. We will meet in the main foyer.

2. Executive Session – There will be an executive session at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Office Conference Room. We have two items to discuss.

3. Sandy Stramonine Recognition – We will be presenting a recognition plaque to Sandy Stramonine for her support of the Wayne Performing Arts. Each year, her studio makes a financial contribution to a Trust and Agency account designated for use in the Performing Arts Center. This funding helps offset purchases of lighting, sound and technical equipment. You had asked earlier that we do something special for her. Sandy responded that she is going to try to attend because she has a class at that time, and that her husband Claude will be there for sure.

4. Ray Wager:   Mr. Wager will be here to review his recently completed audit report. You will be asked to accept that report as part of the consensus agenda.

5. AP US History Textbook Recommendation - Larry Spring and Michelle Timothy, High School AP History teacher, will be presenting the committees recommendation for the new Advanced Placement US History textbook.

6. NYSSBA Conference: Board members are asked to share some of the information they gleaned from the recent conference.

7. Business Items: You will find numerous items including the Treasurers Report, Personnel Action, CSE recommendations, budget transfers and the audit report in your packet

 Newsletter:

1. Thefts at High School - We have had a break in the investigation of thefts at the high school. 7 calculators and a cell phone have been recovered. Our assistant principal will give you a more detailed report at the Board meeting.

2. Sectionals Update - The remaining two teams in sectional play are our boys and girls volleyball teams. They will be competing on Saturday. Game times and locations are listed below.

3. MS Bomb Threat – On Thursday evening, October 30, a custodian found a note in the 2nd floor boys (6th grade wing) bathroom written on tissue paper stating that they were going to bring a bomb into school tomorrow. The custodian called Mr. Armocida and notified him of what they found. Mr. Armocida arranged to have some staff come in early and conduct a building sweep. All staff met before the students arrived and were shown the note. The ELA teachers were asked to request a writing sample from all students using specific words that were misspelled in the note. Several staff members had suspicions about who may have written it. When the students arrived, their backpacks and packages were searched. Our SRO, Trooper Frank Ryan called two State Police Officers in to assist with the investigation, one being proficient with handwriting identification. Within a very short time, while an aide was getting a writing sample from the student, he admitted to writing the note. The student later admitted it to the administration and the police. The parents were immediately notified and were very upset by the incident. Bob spoke to the parents personally before they met with Trooper Ryan informing them of what the school’s obligations were. The student has been suspended, pending a superintendent’s hearing and has been charged by the police. As you know, bomb threats are a federal offense. Mr. Armocida noted that he was very pleased with the response of all his staff to the situation, from the custodian’s quick action, the building and student searches and the willingness of staff to actively aid the investigation process.

4. National Honor Society Induction – This Monday evening, the new inductees to the National Honor Society will be named. The ceremony will be held in the HS PAC at 6:00 p.m. If you have an opportunity to attend, please feel free to participate. It is a nicely done evening and will be a proud moment for many parents.

5. Appeal of Superintendent’s Hearing – I have heard no further information about the appeal of a superintendent’s hearing. The parents were informed that the information needed to be submitted in writing to the district clerk. They have decided to proceed with an impartial hearing through Sandy’s office. Perhaps they will let the superintendent’s hearing appeal drop. I will keep you informed.

6. German Students - Eleven German students and their teacher have arrived at Wayne. We had a reception for them on Monday and they went to a Rotary club dinner on Tuesday. They are wonderful students. I hope you get a chance to meet them.

7. Election Day Dinner – There is a pancake dinner at the exempt hall on Election Day. I have plenty of tickets. Don’t buy them from Mark or Frank.
