Days 1-2:
  •  
    Distribute speech rubric.
    Finish: Each student presents a 3 minute news item.
  • Class notes positive attributes of each presentation and makes one suggestion for change.
  • Start next oral presentation: explain something about yourself (4 minutes).
    Day 3
      
    1. Students read info at web sites for College Boards and other sites, teach class what the sites suggest colleges want in college app essays.
  • Students examine sample essays by former students, ranking them by the informal rubric that they have devised.
  • Students write one college app in response to the generic list handed out by teacher or in response to actual colleges that they may apply to. (We will continue this project next week.)

    By Wednesday, write a deductive essay from Vermeer’s painting, The Milkmaid. In terms of composition and theme, what is going on here? Convey this essay to me by 7 p.m. on Wednesday, 09/17.
    Sequence of class work:
    We will examine instructions to strengthen college application essays.

    We will also look at some hard copy sources.
    You will rate several college application essays.
    By 09/19, you will have provided for my review one college application essay. By 09/24, you will have provided for my grading a second college application essay.
    If you do not have your own actual application prompt, I have some choices for you.

    Sequence through week:
    Review our thinking process for Daybook, p. 10, by students posting notes stating theme and rationale.
    Follow directions for pp. 11–12 (15 minutes).
    Practice skills that they identify on Daybook 13, filling out chart on p. 13.
    Using pp. 14 and 15, students practice the skills from the earlier lessons.
    Closure: students evaluate progress toward goal: did they use the tools from this week’s lessons more easily this time?
    Use first Global voc. if time permits, with students making flash cards, using their learning styles/multiple intelligences.

    ELA Lab.09 (meeting day B)
    Examine our class work more closely. Students may work on other subjects, with teacher leading them into using ELA skills.
