“Begin with the end in mind” - - Stephen Covey

Greetings from Wayne Central School District. Below are some items of interest.

Board Meeting:

1. Executive session: We will have an executive session at 7:15 to briefly review the recent volleyball coaching resignation.

2. Opening of School: I will give a report on how the first week of school went. As of this writing it has gone quite well. Our biggest issue is overcrowding, particularly at our high school. We have had many students enroll this summer and finding desks, chairs and books is an issue. I’ll have more information for you at the meeting.

3. Math A: As you have heard there is a new scoring rubric for Math A. Mr. Spring will update the Board on the new rubric and its affect on our math students.

4. Wayne Teacher’s Center: Teacher Center Board Chairperson Kathy Uerz will give details on the Center and its plans to hire a Director.

5. Financial Update: Greg will provide his monthly financial update on our expenditures and cash flow.

6. Board Action Items: You will note the Budget transfers on the consensus agenda. Mr. Armocida and Mrs. Morrin used some of their building supply money for some “get acquainted with our school” activities for incoming Middle and High School students. We need to transfer the money into the proper account. Our Board policy requires that whenever we transfer money from a non-payroll account into a payroll account the Board approve it.
7. Policy : We will have our second reading of the athletic policy. Mr. Triou will be here to answer any questions.

Newsletter:

1. School Funding: The Governor has appointed a panel to make recommendations about school funding reform. This comes after a recent court ruling that the current method is not constitutional. Many area superintendents were excited about the ruling by the courts. They feel it will bring districts more aid. I am not as optimistic. The court ruling basically said that NYC has 37% of the school population but receives only 33% of the funding. This has been true for many years. That 4% represents millions of dollars that come to rural upstate school districts. I am fearful that any new formula will provide more money to NYC at the expense of local districts. If we are lucky, we will see a large increase in State Aid which will mildly impact us locally. If we are unlucky, we will see little or no aid increases with all new money going to NYC.

2. Ginna Plant: The newest information is that there are 5 companies interested in the plant. If this is true it can only be good news for the school district and our tax base. Keep your fingers crossed. I love all these positive rumors!

3. Superintendent Trip: I leave tonight for Florida, so I will be out of the district for the weekend. Mr. Atseff will be on call. I will also have my cell phone with me.

4. Bussing Issue: Some of you may receive a complaint from an OP kindergarten parent about her child not being picked up the first day. Mr. Atseff, Mr. Prince, Mrs. Woodard and I met with Mrs. Simpson this morning to discuss the issue. Actually the bus driver came twice to the stop but being the first day and a new route, it was earlier than expected. I recommended some new procedures which hopefully will resolve the issue to the satisfaction of all.
