English 10
Miss James

Welcome to English 10! This year we will study a wide variety of literature that will help provide information that will satisfy two goals:
·   Help you prepare for the English 11 Regents (You will take this next January and you MUST pass this exam in order to graduate.)
·   Help you to improve as readers and writers

We will be studying the following novels:
Of Mice and Men
And Then There Were None
Lord of the Flies
The Wave
Night

While studying the above novels, you should expect daily reading assignments, reading quizzes and writing assignments that relate to each novel. At the end of each work, you will either take a test that covers the entire novel or you will be required to complete a project.

Our study of drama will include:

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

This work will be read primarily in class, however, you should also be ready for daily quizzes and writing assignments as we progress through the play.

Our work this year will also include a study of poetry and short stories.

You will also have weekly vocabulary lists. There will be a quiz every Friday. After every FIVE vocabulary lists, there will be a cumulative test.

The final component of English 10 is working to improve our writing. The English 11 Regents is a very intensive (6 hours divided into two 3 hour sections) exam which requires us to start early in preparing you. In English 9, you worked with two of the tasks (Task 1 – Listening and Task 4 – Critical Lens Essay). In English 10, we will continue to work on the tasks you’ve already had experience with and also add the remaining two tasks.

In order for you to be successful in this class, you will have to stay caught up on your work. If you miss a day, make sure you come to me to find out what you missed! I will not chase you down for missed work! I will be available every day after school for extra help or for you to make up missed work, so please take advantage of it! I look forward to a fun and challenging year.
