    Essay: after reading Miller's own comments on his play (1948-1951), explain how his creation, Willy Loman, shows his "indestructible will . . . to achieve his humanity." (1950);
         
    For the week of May 5, students will explore and reveal themes established by imagery; issues of power as established by on-stage drama, notably in scenes with Claudius; and matters of irony. .
    After reading the text outside of class, students will view the Mel Gibson movie.
    Students should expect a test on the entire play on the second day of class this week

    Day 1 and each day thereafter, students justify their answers to our guides and explicate theme, characterization, motivation, settiing, primarily by answering the questions in their guides (handed out).
    Discuss two chapters each day: chapters 15-16, 17-18, 19-20.
    They begin to evaluate the book: how does it compare with other readings; which is more challenging? which is better? How do they make that judgement?
    For part of each period, students begin drafts for essay chosen from handout.
