“All life is an experiment.”                - - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Greetings from Wayne Central School District. Below are some items of interest.

Newsletter:

1. Middle School Student - Darlene Fousse, 7th grade student at Wayne Middle School who was struck by a hit and run driver this past weekend remains in a coma with severe head trauma, a broken pelvis, broken collarbone and on a respirator. They have been waiting for her to become stable enough for a MRI (prior attempts had caused too much pressure on the brain). They were able to perform the MRI earlier this week which is a slight sign of progress. The results of that test are not known to us at this time. Her condition essentially has not improved since the accident. I have sent a card on behalf of the Board of Education.

2. Homecoming Activities – Thursday kicked off the events for our annual Homecoming Weekend. The high school held its pep rally and class spirit competitions. Mr. Jones has won the honor of “kissing the cow” at Saturday night’s soccer game. The homecoming parade and bonfire are tonight at the football game. Our girls Class B #2 ranked volleyball team meet their #1 ranked opponents (Victor) Thursday night and lost a tough match.

3. Mrs. Wernert - As promised, attached is the letter sent to students who ride Mrs. Wernert’s bus. So far there has been little reaction from parents.

4. High School Regents Requirements - Some questions were asked about State requirements for a Regents diploma. We are in a phase-in right now but beginning with our current tenth graders the following rules apply:

Courses            Regent Exams
English 9, 10, 11, 12          Comprehensive English (11)

Participation in Government      Regents Science (any 1)

Students also need a sequence. In total students need 22 credits and 5 regents to obtain a diploma.

Dear Parents

We have learned that your child’s bus driver, Mrs. Kim Wernert has come down with a case of viral meningitis. In looking at the literature on the illness, it states that it can be difficult to prevent the spread of the illness since most people who are infected do not become sick. If you are in contact with someone who has viral meningitis, the most effective method of prevention is to wash your hands thoroughly and often. For additional information, you may wish to contact your doctor or check out information on the web at the “Center for Disease Control and Prevention.”

We have contacted our school physician, Dr. Devore. She has indicated that this time of year viruses are common and may turn into meningitis. While viral meningitis makes you very sick, it is not life threatening like bacterial meningitis can be.

Mrs. Wernert is home and expects to return to work as soon as she feels better. I wanted to make you aware of the situation and also to emphasize to you that this is a case of viral not bacterial meningitis. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either myself at 524-0201 or Director of Student Services, Mrs. Sandy Woodard, at 524-0209

Sincerely,

Michael Havens
