Greetings from Wayne Central School District. Below are some items of interest.

Newsletter:

1. Retirement Incentive Update The area Superintendent’s were queried at this morning’s Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES meeting as to whether or not their Boards will be accepting the retirement incentive. It appears that about 2/3rds will not and 1/3 will. Of the districts accepting the incentive, some are giving a blanket while others are targeting one or two individuals. One district offered it to two high school tenure areas. There was an uproar from elementary teachers and as a result, their Board is reconsidering.

2. Ginna - Yesterday Mr. Atseff, Mr. Robusto, and myself traveled to Albany with Supervisor Dick Clark and Asessor Eileen Perkins. We met with ORPS (Office of Real Property Services) to understand how they have computed their assessment of the Ginna Powerplant. This is a first step in developing our strategy for ending the erosion of the Ginna assessment ($13,000,000 per year). I believe it was a successful day. Our resident real estate expert, Frank Robusto, has agreed to review in detail some of the 3” thick documents with the Board. (thanks Frank!). Our next step will be for us to review what strategies and dollar amount we should be striving for. We will give you an update at our next meeting.

3. Temporary Licences – As you know, New York State has stated that effective 2/1/03, it will no longer issue temporary licenses. Typically we have hired 1-2 people on temporary licenses each year. Generally they are people who are already certified in one area and are working towards certification for which we hired them. These are in hard-to-find areas such as technology. While it will affect us somewhat, it is estimated that as many as 25% of NYC teachers are on temporary licenses. We believe that SED is about to blink on this one. We believe they will end temporary licensing, but will provide essentially the same thing under a new guise. Let’s hope this happens.

4. SAT Score - Lory Morrin received a phone call from the father of Sophomore, John Britt. He took the SAT’s recently and received a score of 1600. That is a perfect score. Lory noted that John has already taken every math course offered at Wayne and that he is obviously a very bright young man. She will receive official notification of this score soon.

5. MS Student- Parent Letter – Mr. Armocida met with Mr. & Mrs. Ambeau regarding the incidents noted in their letter to the Board. The meeting went very well with both parents. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Ambeau, a Monroe County Sheriff who is a trained educator for the county on sexual harassment, has agreed to provide a workshop in the fall for our staff.

6. Seabreeze Trip - For many years the middle school has hosted an end of the year trip to Seabreeze. With the exam schedule this year, the students/staff did not have a day left at the end of the year in which this could occur. Mrs. Monica Ambeau contacted the Ontario Recreation Department to host the trip. Ontario Recreation agreed to host it as long as specific criteria was met. This includes the guarantee of 40 parent chaperones, approved by Wayne Middle School principal. Along with Recreation Department staff, this would allow for approximately a 15:1 student/chaperone ratio. Wayne Central buses would provide the transportation. Drop off and pick up location would be at the Parks building on Knickerbocker Road. I support this effort and appreciate the cooperation between our parents, school and community organizations.

7. HS Incident – As you may have heard, a handful of high school sophomores (appx. 10) pre-planned a food fight to occur in one of the lunch periods on Thursday. They managed to make quite a mess in the 45 seconds it took our staff to break it up. Holly and Ron were in the cafeteria when it occurred and Lory was in the hall outside the cafeteria with a staff member. They quickly got things under control, and removed the students. As a result, 10 students were suspended (for the afternoon only – because of the year end testing). They were a group of kids that are generally well behaved. There parents were contacted to come in and pick them up and were very upset with their students.
