Middle School May Calendar
From Mr. Kissinger……..
Dear Parents,
Great news! The technology project at the Middle School is
complete. During the past si
x weeks the staff and students have
moved to alternate rooms, avoided certain hallways and listened to
drills as the contractors
worked quickly and efficiently. Each
classroom now has a computer outlet or “drop” and both computer
labs have new furniture a
nd 24 computers each. By the start of next
school year each classroom will have a computer with Internet access.
Attention
parents of 6
th
grade students: If you are interested in
enrolling your child in either accelerated English and/or accelerated
math next year you must attend one of two informational meetings.
The dates are May 8
th
at 6 P.M. and May 14
th
at 7 P.M. Both
will be
held in the middle school multipurpose room.
Spring has finally sprung and with it comes our spring sports season
(say
that three times real fast!). Bring a chair and come out for an
invigorating afternoon cheering on our great teams. Hope to se
e you
there.
Sincerely yours,
Russell Kissinger
Middle School Principal

Our classroom has been involved in an
Investigation! Students have been investigating
fractions, per
cents and decimals. Students discuss
common uses of fractions, percents and decimals
and their meanings. In pairs, they solve
sets of
word problems. The mathematical emphasis will
be: (for this investigation)
•
using fractions to describe how many in a
group
share a particular characteristic
•
representing fractions and percents on a number
line
•
finding equivalent fractions and
percents
•
ordering fractions and percents
•
interpreting common uses of percent
•
illustrating and identifying percents on 10
by
10 grids
•
using 1/2 and 1 as references in ordering
fractions and percents
•
building on knowledge of unit fractions to use
fractions with numerators greater than 1
The next two investigations will be models for
fractions and exploring decimals. All
investigations use hands
on activities and games to
reinforce concepts. It is enjoyable for all.

Winding up the study of the human body systems,
several students volunteered to help a plastic
system pass a cracker/water mixture from start to
finish! We wound up with the reproductive system,
study of Aids, Sexual Abuse
, and child abduction
preventions. Mr. John L’Hommedieu, a drug and
alcohol counselor at Park Ridge Hospital and Mr.
Michael Mu
lberry, Williamson Allstate Insurance
agent, spoke to us about causes and effects of
“drugging and drinking.” They very effecti

opened a few eyes and ears, I’ll tell you.

Selec
ting a person from a foreign country and
preparing to emigrate from there to the United
States in 1900 led to Immigration Day at
Ellis
Island. Our classroom became the checkpoint
entrance for immigrants who passed from the boat
(the stairway across from t
he classroom) to a room
where their language was not understood, where
they were inspected for trachoma, lice, insanity and
abje
ct poverty, where some did not pass the
entrance requirements, and where a greedy
inspector appropriated some of their remembran
ces
from the homeland. This simulated feelings of
frustration and despair, hope and even joy for
others. Each student expresse
d their emotions
about the ordeal as well as told about their
individual situations.

Physical Education
News
By Mrs. Freischlag and Mr. Mitchell
In physical education class we have
been square/line dancing. Stu
dents have
been doing a great job “doe si doe
ing”
and “sashaying” around the gym.
Next, we will start getting ready for the sp
ring
physical fitness test. Over the past few years we
have seen continued improvement in Williamson
M.S. students scores. Our
goal is to have all
students improve their spring fitness scores.
We will be teaching lacrosse skills and track and
field in
the spring.
Stair Climb for
Cystic Fibrosis
Congratulations to the Williamson Middle School!
The staff and the students raised over $
500.00 for
cystic fibrosis. Mrs. McMahon (Enrichment) and
Mrs. Freischlag (Physical Education) recently
competed in a stair cli

fibrosis. A special thanks to the 5/6th and 7/8th
grade student associations for their generous
donations.

By Mr. Mitchell
Thank you to all the 5th and 6th graders for a
wonderful year of Intramurals. It was a
quick year
but we had a lot of fun. We had many students
who stopped in once and a while and some who
came every week. As the
year winds down, I
encourage all students to get outside and exercise.
