Middle School March Calendar
From Mr. Kissinger……..
Dear Parents,
March promises to be a busy month. Our eighth graders are taking
the English Language A
rts (ELA) assessment on the sixth and seventh
of this month and have been working hard in Ms. Ludwig’s class in
preparation. Me
dieval day, the talent show and music in our schools
are just a few of the many activities taking place during the month.
Time for a little housecleaning. While it is enjoyable to see the
students here early for school, I need to remind parents that thi
s is
unsupervised time. It would be safest for your child to time his or her
walk so that they arrive to the school grounds at
7:30 A.M.
With the pleasant surprise of warm weather recently came inevitable
skateboarders. While this can be a fun and healt
hy physical activity
please remind your child to always wear a helmet and protective gear
at all times. In order to use the sch
ool property for this activity your
child must wait until after 3:00 P.M. and must be wearing the
appropriate gear. While on th
e subject of physical activities please
take some time to look over the exciting opportunities being offered
by the Williamson R
ecreational Committee. Not only are these great
programs for the children of the community but a perfect way for you
as an adul
t to make a difference in their lives. Volunteer to coach,
assist or to simply bring fruit to the games for the participants.
Sincerely yours,
Russell Kissinger

Miss Brownell’s
Classroom
Many of the world’s interesting facts are found in
math. Numbers and statistics fascinate many. In
our Chapter titled “Whole numbers and Decimals,”
students will round, compare, order, estimate, add,
and subtract numbers and de
cimals from .001 to
999 billion. Students will analyze problems and
strategies, draw pictures and choose an operation to
solve
problems.
Our science focus is the human body.
In this unit information and activities
will be presented on the eight systems
of the body: nervous system,
circulatory system, respiratory system,
digestive system, muscular system, skeletal system,
excre
tory system, and reproductive system.
I would like to recognize classroom stars:

Exercising their minds were 9 students in this class
who read for Book
It! minutes. In top fitness for
reading were Tommy Godsey reading 1,205
minutes, Alex Cappon with 1,863 minutes, Nina
Calabresi with a hefty 3,500 minutes for
the month
of January. Two months to go with this particular
reading challenge.
We’ve exercised the body, too, as we learn to touch
a sca
pula with a phalange! Time for that human
body systems study in Science, and two girls, Katie
Johnson and Roxanne Bowman drew v
ery detailed
sketches of the skeletal system to win prizes for
their effort. Muscles are next, and this is quite a
popular stud
y as those cow muscles make pretty
tempting treats in the form of hamburgers.
Nina Calabresi led a celebration of the 100th day
of
school. That snow day changed the plans a mite,
but we dealt with it in grand style. Less than half
of the school year rem
ains!
Colonial days were times of fun, as well as work,
so we polished off that area with that time period’s
habit of using the
stems of day lilies as bubble
pipes. Now we have crossed the continent on the
Oregon Trail and visited the Whitman’s Mission
—
old neighbor’s from Rushville, you know. Our
nation is dividing economically, politically, and
socially. All of those Yankee f
actories, southern
plantations, money, and slavery issues will soon
bring us to the brink of war within our new nation.
In our
Reading,
A Family Apart
(from the Orphan
Train Series), initiated observations of free and
slave state divisions.
Freedom Cross
ing by
Margaret Goff Clark (from Lewiston, NY)
developed the feelings of northern desires to free
the slaves in spite of the Fug
itive Slave Act.
