STUDENT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

STUDENT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The Board of Education mandates that all students, regardless of race, color, creed, sex and national origin, religion, age, economic status, marital status or disability, shall be eligible for all awards and scholarships given or disseminated by the school district. Such awards and scholarships must be consistent with the goals and purposes of the school district.

Eligible candidates for academic or other achievement awards will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, school citizenship, and/or co-curricular performance, as applicable to the type of award being given. Recipients of academic awards shall be selected by the Building Principal from a list of eligible candidates prepared in consultation with appropriate school staff.

Scholarships to high school graduates will be awarded on the basis of the student's academic achievement, his/her potential for success at an institution of higher learning, financial need, and the student's inability to pursue his/her education without the scholarship. The Board of Education shall select the recipient(s) of scholarship(s) awarded by the district from a list furnished by the High School Principal after consultation with appropriate school staff.

The Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee is authorized to review and determine which proposed awards and scholarships from non-school donors are acceptable.

Attendance Awards

The Board recognizes that the regular and consistent attendance of students is important to their success in the educational program.

Efforts by students to achieve exemplary attendance records will be recognized each year in the awards ceremony field at the conclusion of forty (40) weeks of school. At such time, a “Certificate of Perfect Attendance” will be issued to qualified students by the Building Principal. Criteria for award of this certificate include:

 1.  a record of attendance showing no absences or incidence of tardiness; and
 2.  a record showing no more than four (4) hours of absence for legal reasons as outlined  in Policy 5160, Student Absences and Excuses.

Under special circumstances, students' efforts to correct or improve their records of attendance may be deemed worthy of recognition. A “Certificate of Excellence in Attendance” shall be presented to students whom the Principal and/or school nurse wish to honor for special achievement in improving their attendance records.
