GRADE 8 ACCELERATION

The Board of Education provides the opportunity for intellectually able eighth grade students to enroll in courses of study beyond the regular eighth grade program. Qualified students in grade eight shall have the opportunity to take high school courses in Regents Course I Mathematics and Earth Science.

Parents shall be notified in writing when their child enters grade six (6), or when their child enrolls in the Middle School, of the opportunity for acceleration in grade eight (8).

Students who elect to accelerate must demonstrate readiness by satisfying one of the following:

 1.  enrolling in the high school course as a result of successful completion of an      accelerated program, when such program is provided, prior to grade eight; or,

 2.  notifying the Middle School Principal of their intent to accelerate, prior to June 1 of
the seventh grade year, and demonstrating mastery of course content to be waived.

In all cases, the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee shall be responsible for determining whether the eighth grade student has demonstrated readiness in each subject in which he or she is to begin high school courses.
