The Board of Education delegates the authority for the selection of library materials, including the selection of printed and non-printed material, to the district’s librarians, teachers, Principals, etc., under the leadership of the Superintendent of Schools.

General selection criteria shall include resources that:

The superintendent shall be responsible for the selection of resource materials within these criteria and for the determination of factual accuracy, readability, authoritativeness, integrity and quality of format.

Whenever possible both print and nonprint media and equipment are to be examined or previewed through professional meetings, conferences, and exhibits. If materials and equipment cannot be physically examined, selection should be based on reviews from recognized sources such as Booklist, School Library Journal, Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, etc.

The selection of materials shall be guided by the philosophy and principles set forth in the following documents:

The Student’s Right to Read [1982, National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)]

Any complaints concerning the selection of library materials should be brought to the district in accordance with the procedure outlined in regulation 1420-R.

If any person wishes to permanently remove materials from a school district library, he/she must seek the formal approval of the Board. The Board shall make its decision based solely on the educational suitability of the material in question.
