“ The directive in life, the moral imperative was so uncomplicated. It could be expressed in single words, not complete sentences. It sounded like this: Look. Listen. Choose. Act.” - - - Barbara Hall
Greetings from Wayne Central School District. Below are some items of interest.

| OP Incident - Monday morning, the smell of smoke was detected by some staff/students in the vicinity of Mr. Thomson & Mrs. Rosedahl’s classroom. There were no students in the room at the time. When the custodian investigated he found some papers in the room smoldering. It was quickly put out with water. District and OP administrators investigated what might have occurred along with School Resource Officer, Kim Smith. As I announced at Wednesday’s meeting, Mr. LaRuche was able to get a boy in the class to admit he was the one responsible. The attached letter was sent home to inform parents of what occurred. Mr. Atseff, Mr. Davis and myself reviewed the adult response to the incident and determined that proper protocols were not followed. The alarm has to be pulled immediately when there is the smell of smoke. We do not investigate the source first. A remedial plan is being developed and our training program is being reviewed. Basically, no one could believe there actually could be a fire and so were looking for a different reason for the smell. That is a dangerous mistake that cannot be repeated.

| High School Prank - This year’s senior class prank was to bring crickets into the school today. We had heard earlier on Thursday they were bringing in something green. I received a call to my cell phone last night that students were out buying up all the crickets they could find. We searched students and found many crickets. There were a few that did get through our blockade. Students hoped that they would be making lots of chirping noise but they were actually rather quiet. The worst thing that happened was that when I received the call I was in my car and I was pulled over for not having my hands free plugged in. Do you thing I can write off the ticket as a business expense?

| Krista Law Memorial 5K - The Wayne Varsity Club sponsors a 5k in memory of Krista Law, a Wayne Central (District Office) employee that lost her fight with cancer at a tragically young age. Both her daughters were very involved in Wayne Athletics. The Booster Club does this as a fundraiser. If you are interested in participating, you just need to show up Saturday morning at the high school.

| 2004-2005 Board Meeting Calendar - Enclosed is a draft of next year’s board meeting schedule. I thought I would give you a chance to look it over before it is adopted due to the many changes. Please note that meetings are on Thursdays, except where otherwise noted. The April 27 meeting is on a Wednesday evening, as required by BOCES for their annual voting process. The April 4 Three Boards Meeting is on Monday to fall in line with the hosting board’s schedule. The May 5 budget hearing date is set in accordance with the “not more than 14, not less than 7 days prior to the actual vote “ rule. Please let me know if there are any comments.

| Transition Committee - The teachers for our eighth to ninth grade transition program will be Jackie Courtney, Andrew Struzek, Greg Geesler and Jackie Shier. This is a great team. We are hopeful this six week summer program will dramatically reduce the number of ninth grade failures.

Dear families,
I am writing to you today to inform you of an incident at Ontario Primary School Monday morning June 7, 2004.
At approximately 9:20 this morning smoke was smelled in Mr. Thomson’s and Mrs. Rosdahl’s second grade classroom. There were no children in the room. Mr. Jacobson, our custodian, and Mr. Lucieer, OE’s custodian discovered some smoldering papers near the bathroom and doused them with water.
Wayne Central’s School Resource Officer, Mrs. Smith and many of the district office administrative staff including Superintendent Havens were over to investigate.
As you can well imagine, I am very upset over the seriousness of this incident.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or information about this incident.
Sincerely,
Robert C. La Ruche
