Letter to the Board

October 10, 2008

“We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.” - - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Board Letter

1. Jackie Question: Jackie raised a question at the board meeting last evening during board member comments regarding whether the district has the “impact program.” In speaking with Marc Blankenberg this morning, he tells me that we do have the impact program at the high school. It is a concussion management program. This is a software program used to help evaluate concussions; ie: it tests memory and recall.

2. Tom Question: Tom raised a question at the board meeting last evening during board member comments regarding whether there is a sunset on the EXCEL money. Greg and I will follow up on this and report back to you.

3. Four County Meeting: The Wayne Central School Board and Administration has been asked to participate in the October 29 Four County General Session meeting regarding our paperless board meeting format. They would like to have board members attend the meeting to provide feedback and insight into the process. Any members who are able to attend should let Lori know by October 15 so that we can respond to Sharon at Four County.

4. NSBA National Convention: Food for thought… As mentioned at the board meeting, the National School Boards Association 2009 National Convention will be held April 4-7, 2009 in San Diego, California. Registration opens October 16. Anyone interested in attending should let Lori know so that hotel accommodations can be arranged. You can find information about the conference at their web site by going to www.nsba.org/conference .

5. Ginna Recognition: Per board member Dom’s request, I will send a letter of thanks to the Ginna staff who participated in the Exploration Institute this summer.

6. Dr. Spanneut’s daughter: Former Superintendent Gene Spanneut’s daughter (his second oldest) was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (age 32). Some of you will remember working with Gene. He retired from Penn Yan a couple of years ago. She never smoked a day in her life, is extremely health conscious, into organic foods and is an outdoor enthusiast and a runner. I am attaching a flyer about a benefit the family is putting on. His youngest daughter, Carrie, owns the old school house on Finley Road and just updated Lori on Val’s situation. To add to the tragedy, their oldest daughter, Rochelle (age 34), was fighting a brain tumor while Gene was with Wayne. I believe they were able to remove the tumor and she is in remission.

7. Flu Shots Cancelled: Attached is an email from Mark Callahan canceling the flu shots at Wayne and explaining the reasons why. Also offered in the email are alternative options. Unfortunately this is out of our hands. It is a nice benefit we have been able to offer in the past, but are not able to this year. Hopefully options will open up again in the future.

Dear Wayne Staff:

Please be informed that the flu shot clinics scheduled for next week have been cancelled. The nursing agency that we contracted with has recently severed their billing arrangement with Excellus BCBS. As a result, all employees would have been charged $30 and Excellus will not accept claims for re-imbursement. We have been working with Excellus to re-establish the billing arrangement to no avail.

The following websites provide listings of flu shot clinics in locations throughout Wayne County (scroll to bottom of page or you'll be attending a rabies clinic) and Monroe County (the locations in white accept BCBS):

    www.monroecounty.gov/File/Health/Flu%20Master%2010-3-08.htm

    www.co.wayne.ny.us/Departments/publichlth/CurrentEvents.html

We are also aware of a clinic at the Furnace Road Tops on November 1st from 10AM to noon.

Aside form these options, many doctor's office offer the flu shot without an appointment at specified dates and times. Please contact your doctor for more information.

We regret any inconvenience this may cause you and we highly encourage you pursue these alternative arrangements.

Have a great holiday weekend.

Mark
