Feature of the Month: "How to 'Drug-Proof' Your Child"

Recently, there seems to be an increase in the usage of drugs by school age children. A trend of drug use socially is on the rise. General Barry McCaffrey, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in our country has some steps to drug-proof your child. Some of the ways are to:

  1. Set family standards on drugs and alcohol use.
  2. Let kids know consequences and punishments for violating family rules.
  3. Set aside time everyday to talk with your kids, listen and care.
  4. Help your child establish realistic goals.
  5. Know your children's friends, spend time with them.
  6. Get excited about things your kids care about. Do fun things as a family.
  7. Be aware of loss of interest in school or hobbies, or mood swings.
  8. Talk with your kids about duties and responsibilities for the future.
  9. Make home a positive place.
  10. Be a nosy parent. Ask kids questions. Tell your kids you are doing this because you love them.
