Preparing Children and Parents for College Transitions | Past Issues |
I remember 17 years ago like it was yesterday. The day I left for college is one of the most memorable events of my life. No book, conversation, or research paper could have prepared me or my family for this EVENT. I cried the entire trip to Plattsburgh from Syracuse, and cried even harder when my parents told me the next time I would be home was Thanksgiving . Tears rolled down my face, and I wanted to go back to Syracuse. As a few weeks went by, I became better adjusted, and so did my family. When I saw my parents for parents' weekend, it was wonderful! So what led to our successful transition? I feel it may have been the hopes and dreams of some day having a degree leading to a better job. Also, the fact that my parents' strength, hope and encouragement was the best foundation I could have ever had.Today, there is so much information out there to help parents help their kids. The technology alone is the best vehicle to help with questions, stay connected, and provide resources for the future.
Before leaving for college, have a plan, vision, dream of what you would like to do, or make a deal with yourself that you will try to find it.
