As this issue goes to press, we are experiencing our first official snowfall of the season. While this
weather helps put us in the mood for the winter holidays, it also brings the possibility of ‘snow days.’
The decision to close school is not always clear cut. When inclement conditions early in the morning
turn to blue skies a few hours later, you may wonder why school is not in session. The safety of our stu -
dents is always the critical component in decision-making. In early morning, the current and predicted
state of the roads, visibility, wind chill, and forecast snowfall are all examined in light of how they
effect the safe transportation of children to school. We assure you that the decision is not made hastily,
and we recognize the inconvenience that change in schedules can bring. When conditions before six
o’clock in the morning indicate that the journey to school will be hazardous, we will close school and
provide notification to everyone in a timely manner. On emergency closing days, all evening activities
are also canceled.
We welcome a new member to the Keshequa School community! Mrs. Karen Mead has been
appointed our Middle/High School Assistant Principal. Mrs. Mead has been a Middle School teacher
in Dansville, and brings a variety of educational leadership experience as well. Some of her responsi-
bilities include student discipline, safety procedures and planning, and attendance monitoring. We are
excited to have Mrs. Mead join our team and know she will be an asset to our District.
At last month’s Board of Education meeting, the Thomas Group, our architects for the EXCEL
project, presented a status update. We are now at the end of the design development phase, and the
construction documents are receiving final refinements before being sent to the State Education
Department in Albany. We anticipate the review may take from ten to sixteen weeks. When it is
concluded we will begin the bidding process. At this time, we are on schedule for work to begin in the
Summer of 2008. Major work in both buildings includes window replacement, roof repairs, increase
of handicapped accessibility, improvements to the HVAC systems for better energy efficiency and
upgrades to technology, including our security system. We are also renovating the kitchen in Dalton,
while replacing damaged tile and auditorium seating in the Nunda building.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our Communication Survey last month.
Once the results are compiled we will share them with you. Our website now features a ‘newsflash’ op -
tion under the Current Events section. If you would like email notification of events or changes in the
calendar, you can sign up there. As always, you are invited to contact me with questions or concerns.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our concerts and sports events during the winter. On
behalf of Keshequa Central School District, I wish each of you happy, safe, and peaceful holidays!

Emergency School Closings
When schools must be closed, the decision is made by the Superintendent
of Schools based on available information and recommendations. If the decision
is made to close the schools, the Superintendent informs the following radio and
television stations which then broadcast the information immediately:
Radio
Television
WHAM (1180 AM)
WKBW (Channel 7)
WBEE (92.5 FM)
WHEC (Channel 10)
WPXY (97.9 FM/1280 AM)
WOKR (Channel 13)
WDNY (93.9 FM/1400 AM)
If the schools must close during the day, parents should make sure chil-
dren know in advance what to do should they come home unexpectedly and
find no one there. Prior arrangements should be made to have children cared
for until a parent arrives home.
Math Club
Travels to Alfred
by Ron Macomber
On November 2 Mathematics
teachers Ron Macomber and Gerald
Goho accompanied 21 students in
Keshequa’s Math Club to Alfred
University for the 39
th
annual Nevins
Competition. Last year over 300
students from across New York and
Pennsylvania participated in the
competition. First, second, and third
place winners receive scholarships of
$6,000, $8,000 and $10,000 to Alfred
University. The competition consist of
a 30-question exam that students have
an hour and twenty-five minutes to
complete. It is an extremely difficult
exam, which consists of questions
that require very creative problem-
solving skills. The exam is created by
the mathematics faculty at Alfred
University. It is in memory of William
Nevins, a former student and professor
at Alfred University.
Mrs. Jines’ Food
Drive Challenge!
Mrs. Jines’ 7th Grade Social Studies
classes are busy collecting non-perish -
able food items to donate to the local
food pantry. All month students can
bring in food and other nonperishable
goods. A competition is in place and the
class that brings in the most amount of
food will enjoy a pizza party on Decem-
ber 21, during lunch. Mrs. Jines
hopes to instill in her students the
importance of giving during the
holiday season.
Music in Our School
by Kim Coffey
Jr. High Area All-State Chorus
Five Keshequa students were selected to participate in the 2007 Jr. High Area
All-State Chorus in November. Students were chosen based on their solo perfor -
mance scores at the NYSSMA sanctioned solo festival last spring. Selected students
were:
Michaela Hiller,
daughter of Tom and Marnie Hiller;
Katelyn Gelser,
daughter
of Stephen and Luanne Gelser;
Logan Tompson,
son of James and Tracy Thompson;
Brandon Lunn,
son of John and Priscilla Lunn; and
Nolan Gelser,
son of Bob Gelser.
The students sang under the direction of Stephen Caracciolo, Professor of Voice
at Roberts Wesleyan College. The chorus sounded fantastic.
Sr. High Area All-State Chorus
Lindsay Gunn,
daughter of Lisa and Ed Gunn,
was accepted to Senior High
Area All-State Chorus. Based on her NYSSMA solo fest score, Lindsay was previ -
ously accepted to Conference All-State Chorus and therefore, automatically accept -
ed to Area All-State. The festival was held at Attica Central School in November.
Make sure you congratulate Lindsay when you see her!

Counseling Corner
Is the Cost of College Worth It?
As parents, we struggle with the everyday cost of living and often wonder where we will get the mon-
ey to help our children continue their education after high school. This is a decision that will take planning
and sacrifice for many.
Here are some facts that may help you and your child make that decision:
Going to college is an investment of a lifetime. Studies have shown that individuals with a bachelor’s
degree (four years of college) will earn on the average 62% more a year than those with a high school
diploma. Over a lifetime, this amounts to $1 million more in earnings.
1
The need for employees with a college degree is growing. Studies show more than a million new jobs
for college graduates were added in one year, while two million non-degree jobs where eliminated.
2
Con-
cluding that the opportunities are growing for those with college degrees and shrinking for those without.
The college experience offers much more than the opportunity for future earning potential. It can offer
the chance to develop critical thinking and reasoning skills, explore and experience new opportunities –
both social and academic, and to prepare for and explore a satisfying career with financial freedom and
future opportunities.
Going to college is an investment in the future. It is important for students and parents to realize that
the immediate results we often expect may not be tangible until after a degree has been earned. It requires
dedication and effort but, as with anything that is worthwhile, the returns are priceless.

Transitioning to the Adult World
by Craig Benson
In keeping up with recent district initiatives to increase the post-high school outcomes of our students, the Special Educa -
tion Department has dramatically revamped and intensified its Transition program over the past two years. Transition refers to
planning and services that are needed to prepare our youngsters with disabilities for moving smoothly from school to adult liv-
ing, learning, or earning roles in the community. This process may include targeted instruction; community learning experiences;
and support services to develop skills, knowledge, and abilities to address post-school living, learning or working needs.
Starting in 6
th
grade, special education students are given a number of activities throughout the
year to increase their level of self-determination and self-advocacy skills. Surveys are distributed to
families with the hope of initiating post-school dialogues and increasing investment in current
academic goals. Students are taught to use the NYS Department of Labor’s Career Zone website
to increase their knowledge of post- school options. School District staff help students create
long-term goals and short-term objectives. Tenth grade students are eligible to have a full day
vocational assessment which links together student strengths and career interests. All of this in-
formation is regularly reviewed with students and used to create specific academic and vocational
goals.
Special Education staff members have worked closely with State Education Department trainers
to develop and write more accurate plans for students. As students near graduation, connections
are made with appropriate New York State adult agencies such as VESID or ARC/DDSO that
can help individual students in college, in the workforce, or for those who need support to live
independently. It is hoped that this focus on our students’ futures will pay off not only when they
leave, but also in increased academic achievement in their current classes.

Greetings from

Dalton Elementary!
by Mark Mattle, Elementary Principal
Congratulations to Mr. Isaman, Mr. Uveino and all the
Elementary School Students who participated in the
Hoops
For Heart
fundraiser for the American Heart Association. See
the story on page 8 of this newsletter.
I would like to extend a very special thank you to all
those that helped with this year’s Senior Citizen Thanksgiving
Dinner. Our school was able to say thank you to one of our
community’s greatest resources, our senior citizens, by present-
ing to them a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. We had a great
turnout this year with over 165 people attending. There were
so many individuals that played a part in this great event, The
Dalton Elementary Student Council Students and Advisors,
The Dalton Chorus, The KCTA, Mrs. Gerhig’s Second Grade
Class, The Dalton Cafeteria and Maintenance Staff, Mrs.
Weaver and many more. We received many thanks from our
senior citizens saying, “The dinner was delicious and a bless -
ing to the community,” “Keshequa is one of the very few
schools that gives this lovely service to its senior citizens,
thank you!”
I wish all of our families a wonderful holiday season!
Keshequa students have just
completed the first ten-week marking
period for the school year. Report cards
have been mailed home with grades
and teachers’ comments. Parents and
guardians are asked to take time to
review report cards and give encourag-
ing suggestions for ways to continue or
improve upon the work of the students.
Words of encouragement and time spent
with parents are very important in the
development of students.
I have reviewed the report cards
and am overall impressed with the work
being done by our students. We will
have the honor lists and high honor lists
published by the last week of November.
Our Middle School Student Coun-
cil had officer elections and have elected
the following students as officers of the
club: President – Alex Flint and Gabri -
elle DiAngelo, Vice-President – Kristen
Jackson and John Swartzfager; Secretary
– Sophia Pernicone; and Treasurer-
Logan Thompson. The Middle School
Council has conducted a fund-raiser and
will use the money earned to support
school activities such as dances, movie
nights, game nights, and a possible trip
to Darien Lake in June.
Our mentoring program with the
SUNY Geneseo students has begun.
SUNY Geneseo students have volun-
teered to work with many of our seniors
who are planning on attending college
next fall. The SUNY Geneseo students
assist with how to complete a college ap-
plication, ideas of how to write essays for
an application, how to interview at the
admissions office of a college, along with
many other college preparations activi-
ties.
The month of December is very
busy for our music department. Holiday
concerts will be held on Tuesday, De-
cember 11 and Monday, December 17
for the Middle School and High School
band and choral groups. Be sure to mark
your calendars and plan on attending
these wonderful events to celebrate
music with our students.
Winter sports have begun – basket -
ball, wrestling, and cheerleading. Please
check our web site for schedules of
games or contact our Athletic Director,
Mr. Piraino. Come and enjoy watching
our students as they compete against
neighboring school districts.
Also, I would like to say thank you
to all parents, guardians, and commu-
nity members who continually support
our activities here at Keshequa Central
School. We truly enjoy seeing you at all
our student events.

Senior Citizens Enjoy Thanksgiving at
Keshequa Elementary
On November 16 over 160 senior citizens from the community joined us for a delicious Thanksgiv -
ing feast. Student Council members were proud to serve the guests their meals, specially prepared by our
dedicated kitchen staff. Choral music was provided by the Elementary Select Chorus and eighth grader
Michaela Hillier, who shared her talents on the piano. Student Council is so grateful to the cafeteria staff
for preparing and serving food, the custodial staff for the preparation and cleanup of the cafeteria, Mrs.
Gehrig’s second grade class for providing decorations, Mr. Mattle, Mrs. Capawan, Mr. Aloisio, and Mr.
Wiggins for serving food, and the KCTA for donating flowers. It was a wonderful experience to be able to
share the afternoon with our community members!

WINTER RECESS
Hoops for Heart
Keshequa students have now raised a total of $8494.40 for
the American Heart Association!
One hundred
and three students
in grades 2-5 par -
ticipated in an event
called
Hoops for
Heart,
a fundraiser
for the American
Heart Associa-
tion. Students sold
little basketballs to
interested donors
at any amount the
donor chose. Then
the donor could
put the name of
their choice on the
paper basketball.
Students had a week
and a half to raise as much money as they could. When the time was up,
students
had raised $4113.30 in this event!
Participating students celebrated their success by
playing different basketball games after school.
Second graders raised $762.20; Third graders raised $1367.25; Fourth graders
raised $945; and Fifth graders raided $1038.85.
The top five sellers in the school were: Jaysie Martin $105; Jordan Kapelke $105;
Harlee Shoup $127; Kaitlyn O’Brien $150; Colton Davis $200; Joshua Callaro $225
Mr. Isaman and Mr. Uveino would like to thank all of the students who partici-
pated in this great event.
In the picture from left to right are: Joshua Callaro (5th), Colton
Davis (3rd), Jaysie Martin(4th), Harlee Shoup (4th), Jordan
Kapelke (3rd), and Kaitlyn O’Brien (4th). These are the top five
money raisers in the school.
