Nine tenths of education is encouragement

Wow! How time flies! The

old adage certainly holds

true for this past school year.

I have truly enjoyed my first

year working in the

Keshequa Central School

District. It has been a pleas-

ure to get to know the stu-

dents, faculty, staff and

families in the district. I

would like to thank everyone

for being so welcoming to me.

We have made an update to

our end of year schedule at

Dalton Elementary. Stu-

dents will be in session for a

full day on Monday, June

. They will be dismissed

at 11:30 on Tuesday, June

and Wednesday, June

. Wednesday will be the

last day that school is in ses-

sion for the school year.

Our June calendar is

very busy with lots of ex-

citing events. The 5

grade DARE graduation

will be held on Friday,

June 5

at 9am. Kinder-

garten Graduation is on

Monday June 22

9am. We will also have

awards assemblies for

Kindergarten through

grades on Tuesday,

June 23

and for 3

–

grades on Wednes-

day, June 24

Ms. Valance’s Mystery

Students in Ms. Vallance’s

class have been closely

watching!

They currently have 37 tadpoles

or “polliwogs” that

were delivered as eggs.

On May 29

they will be

5 weeks old !!

Her class has been doing

many reading and writing

activities about tadpoles.

The students have been keeping

track of when they change in

size on a calendar.

They will grow back legs first

and her students are

looking for them next.

Ms. Vallance’s class will let

everyone know what happens

next!

An Authors Celebration

Kindergartners Share with Third Graders

Mrs. Randall’s Kindergarten class in-

vited Miss Kelly’s third graders to come

to an Authors Celebration. The boys and

girls had each written and illustrated two

books over the past month and were

ready to share their published work.

Each kindergartner paired up with a

third grader and read the two books to

very polite listeners. It was a rewarding

experience to have an older child listen

to and appreciate their stories. The kin-

dergartners are sure to be motivated to

continue to write stories for others to

enjoy. Afterwards the children had time

to visit with each other while the third

graders joined them for a snack. These

two classes had worked together earlier

this year for a school wide Peace-

builder’s activity. The children look

forward to getting together again when

the third graders will share their own

published books.

First Grade Class Goes Back in Time

Students in Mrs. Brooker’s and Mrs. Hochbrueckner’s F

irst grade classroom have been learning about the

past. They spent part of an afternoon playing old

fashioned games like hopscotch, marbles, checkers,

a game

called plum pits and writing on chalk boards with ch

alk. The children had a great deal of fun and lear

Mrs. Wood’s Class Has an Appointment with the Docto

A VISIT FROM OUR MEDI-

CAL PROFESSIONALS

On Monday we were so ex-

cited to have a visit from

Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, and

Mrs. Julie Hepler, RN, Mrs.

Wood’s brother and sister.

Mr. Thompson works as an

emergency physician in the

Buffalo area and Mrs. He-

pler is a labor and delivery

nurse at Strong Memorial

Hospital in Rochester.

Mr. Thompson and Mrs. He-

pler came to teach us about

the heart. We learned how

feel

our heart by taking

our pulse in our wrists or

necks. After taking our

pulse the first time, we did

jumping jacks for 30 sec-

onds and then took our pulse

again. The second time, our

pulse was higher. This

showed that the heart beats

faster with exercise.

We were able to

hear

our hearts

beating with the use of stetho-

scopes. We all had a turn to

listen to our own hearts.

We were also able to

see

heart. We borrowed a pre-

served calf heart from Mrs.

Pero, who teaches in the science

department at our high school.

A calf heart is similar to ours,

so we were able to see the

shape of the heart and the dif-

ferent chambers of the heart.

We also watched a video of an

actual human heart beating.

We certainly learned a great

deal from our medical profes-

sionals and we are very thank-

ful to them for coming in to

share with us!

Nurse Hepler & Dr. Thompson

Mrs. Downey's second graders are

busy learning about all the different

parts of their bodies. They learned

about the Respiratory System, the

Muscular System, the Digestive

System, and the Nervous System.

The children traced one of their

classmates and labeled all of the

body parts that they knew. I was

quite impressed. They learned

about how to keep their bodies

healthy as well. We know we need

to exercise and eat right. We will

be discussing the basic food groups

too. We will look in the children's

lunch pails to see who has

healthy food and how that

food helps our bodies.

Hopefully they will share

with you what they have

been learning!!!

Garrett Thompson Places First in Tournament

Our own Garrett Thompson placed

First in the Elementary Chess Tour-

nament at the Rochester Chess Cen-

ter on May 16th, 2009.

Garrett is a Fifth Grader at Dalton

Elementary School. He is in Mrs.

Brickwood’s class.

Wins County Drawing Contest

that witnesses for the plaintiff (Dale

Hampshire) would give information

that might help defend Clara Muffett.

The counsel for Clara Muffett created

opening and closing statements to pre-

sent to the jury and in doing so,

learned the value of persuasive lan-

guage and the use of voice in their

writing to convince others. Alternate

members for Mock Trial also helped a

great deal as they partnered with law-

yers, witnesses and counsel members

to help prepare questions, answers,

statements and provide advice and

guidance.

After many meetings, the

Mock Trial club was finally ready and

on May 15

preceded to the Livingston

County Courthouse where they met

other Mock Trial teams from Geneseo

and Letchworth. During the trial mem-

bers met Judge Cohen and was allowed

to take a tour of the courthouse to

see where inmates are held during tri-

als in which they need to testify. Wit-

nesses from Dalton (Clara Muffett-

Hannah Moriarty, Jean Lewis-Christina

Adams, Dr. Lee McGuiness- William

Rich) took their place in the witness

stand and did their best to answer

questions during direct examinations

from lawyers for the defense

(Brooklyn Cobin, Mary Colombo, Abigail

Wood) as well as during cross-

examination from lawyers from Gene-

seo. Lawyers from Dalton (Kelsey Hol-

ley, Lillian Willett, Amelia Borgus,

Samantha Galton) did a wonderful job

cross-examining witnesses for the

plaintiff Dale Hampshire (from Gene-

seo), and counsel (Kayla Yencer and

Selena Otero) were extremely con-

vincing within their opening and clos-

ing statements presented to the

jury.

In the end after a lengthy

jury deliberation, the verdict was

shared with the judge and each team

eagerly waiting for the decision. The

hard work and dedication of the Dal-

ton Mock Trial members had been

worth it- the jury decided in favor of

Clara Muffett (who as a result, was

cleared of paying her former landlord

Dale Hampshire owed rent!)

As each year’s trial is based

on fictional tales such as Jack and

Jill, Clara Muffett and the Big Bad

Wolf, this year’s trial was extremely

exciting-full of interesting turns and

twists and of course big, black and

poisonous

bers! Your hard work and energy

made it all worthwhile! You should be

very proud of your accomplishment!

Dalton Elementary Mock Trial

News!

On Friday, May 15

, the Mock

Trial club from Dalton won in their

court case “Clara Muffett Vs. Dale

Hampshire”. This year’s Mock Trial

club included 16 fifth graders! The

group was made up of members:

Wil-

liam Rich, Hannah Moriarty, Lillian

Willett, Selena Otero, Christina Ad-

ams, Haili Sonnleitner, Samantha Gal-

ton, Mary Colombo, Kayla Yencer, Jor-

dan Tallman, Chandell Gaddy, Amelia

Borgus, Kelsey Holley, Rachael Bugman,

Abigail Wood and Brooklyn Cobin. This

year’s students from Dalton competed

against students from Geneseo Central

School and Letchworth Central School,

as Dalton members represented Clara

Muffett as her defense team, Geneseo

Central School represented Dale

Hampshire as the plaintiff and Letch-

worth served as the jury.

Throughout the past four

months members of Mock Trial have

been preparing for the trial, which was

held in the Livingston County Court-

house located in Geneseo, New York.

Each member played an important part

in preparing for the big day. Lawyers

and witnesses met and prepared ques-

tions from affidavits (statements

from witnesses) and spent a great deal

of time fine-tuning their questions so

Students in Mrs. Amrhein’s and Mrs.

Nagledinger’s classes researched an

explorer that was instrumental in the

discovery and exploration of New

York State and surrounding areas.

Students were given a ball of clay to

create a figure that resembled their

explorer. They had to package

their explorer as an action figure

that could be sold in stores; with a

catchy phrase and information

about their explorer. All projects

were creative and well done. Stu-

dents then presented their pro-

jects to the class where all learned

a great deal about each explorer.

Mrs. Strathearn taught us some

amazing techniques in art to create

projects like our Buffalo Hide Stories.

We are very proud of our individual art

portfolios. Mrs. Ellison was always

there to help us locate special topics

such as biographies or resources for

animal reports, etc. She was efficient

and eager to help. Mrs. Englert and

Mrs. Colombo took time to help us pro-

duce final copies of our reports with

their computer expertise. Mrs. Sanford

was there to cheer us up with song,

dance and games each week. Also, we

always loved (and needed) our exciting

gym times with Mr. Uveino and Mr.

Isaman.

We were so pleased to earn the year

end fitness trip to Letchworth State

Park!

We were blessed with two terrific

teaching students from SUNY Geneseo.

Ms. Paulman taught us for eight great

weeks of student teaching and more

recently Ms. Mullane participated for a

week more than scheduled just because

she was so inspired to learn and share.

They were both extraordinary young

teachers who offered fresh, diverse les-

sons. The children wished they both

could stay longer.

In addition to plays, parties, a visit

Mrs. Ellis especially enjoyed this year

with second graders. Though two of

our little girls moved away early in the

year, three new gals came to learn with

us. They fit nicely into “our team,” as

Mr. Wiggins would say. We had many

wonderful team building lessons with

Mr. Wiggins that helped to prepare us

for third grade and life.

As a class, our motto was “Don’t

Panic.” It taught us to stay calm and

help each other work through unex-

pected experiences. We became very

good problem solvers !

With the persistence and dedication

of Mrs. Hark and Mrs. Burt, all of the

students improved their reading flu-

ency. Mrs. Hark’s earned lunch dates

were great motivators. Mrs. Burt went

to extra lengths for us when she dem-

onstrated some of the cultural recipes

we were reading about. What a treat!

Mrs. Brooks shared many good

math activities and materials with us

to build math strategies. The children

loved earning rewards from her prize

tub! We especially liked our trial Math

Exchange Program this year. All the

second graders were able to visit other

second grade teachers and Mrs. Brooks

each week for extra math activities to

reinforce monthly goals.

Rochester Science Museum and Plane-

tarium…. . all these special teachers as

well as Speech, OT and PT made for a

fabulous year.

Of course we owe many thanks to

Gayle and other custodians who take

pride in keeping our room and building

the best it can be for the students. And

we can’t forget to thank our patient bus

drivers who safely delivered our kids

daily. Many thanks to our nurturing

cafeteria staff and our nurse, Mrs. San-

ford, who is extremely helpful at many

levels every day. Also I appreciate

Mrs. Weaver’s coordinating communi-

cations and Mrs. Hunt’s accessible di-

rection.

I would especially like to thank all

of the parents who supported “our

team” with whatever we needed to be

successful this year. We were very for-

tunate to have so many caring, coop-

erative people looking out for us. For

sure, I will miss my second grade

On May 5

the students and faculty of Dalton Elementary were

treated to a visit by author and storyteller, Rafe

Martin.

Rafe lives in Rochester and came to visit for the d

ay to thrill us with his unique style of storytelli

ng.

To prepare for his visit the students spent a lot

of time in library class hearing his stories such a

. We found out the difference be-

tween original tales and traditional tales

and that Mr. Martin enjoys writing both in his

books. He also loves whales, gorillas and

especially mammoths! Many teachers worked with

the students in their classrooms on pro-

jects to hang in the halls to welcome Rafe to our

school.

At his presentations he made us think

about where our imagination and ideas are stored

and that it is we, as individuals, who

make stories come alive. The kindergarteners and

first graders heard the story Foolish

, the second and third grad-

ers heard The Shark God

and the fourth

and fifth graders heard The Monster Bear

. Each

group had a short time to ask questions

of Rafe. A student from each grade level was

chosen from a random drawing to win a

free, signed copy of one of his books. You can
