Last night’s Board of Education meeting began with Public Participation. During
committee announcements, Laurie Verbridge was welcomed as the 5
    th
    Board member
having been sworn in earlier in the day. Bill Herbert reported on the recent Town Board
meeting and Deb Larson reported and shared a short tape on the
    Young Americans
    recent
    trip to Williamson.
Under the Consent Agenda, several cocurricular appointments were made, re
assignments in the bus garage were approved and the claims for payment were cleared.
The Elementary School Planning Team was invited to share in an informal discussion
with the Board on their work this summer. They shared the process of data analysis,
questioning and planning they followed. The two action plans they have developed this
year contain many strategies, all of which focus on increasing student achievement.
The Building Principals’ reports were reviewed by the Board. All three of the
Building Principals reported on the start of the school year and changes that had been
made in their building. The High School report included an invitation to attend the
    awarding of the Old English
    W
    on Friday, September 28.
Under Old Business, the Board discussed the repair of the bus garage roof. All
repair work, including the most recent, has been unsuccessful. Therefore, the Board has
decided to hold a public hearing at the next Board meeting to discuss using the capital
repair fund to replace the roof. Parking at the High School was also discussed. At this
time, a decision on adding parking spaces was put on hold. It was decided that for larger
events parking would be provided off site and shuttle buses would be provided. This
issue will be revisited when the 5 year building plan is addressed.
Under New Business, the Board held a second reading and adopted three policies
dealing with the recently enacted S.A.V.E. legislation. Next, an extended discussion was
held on the use of skateboards on school property. At present this is allowed as long as
participants wear the proper protective gear. Problems have arisen over enforcing this as
well as enforcing where these young adults are skateboarding. A decision was made to
call parents and confiscate skateboards of offenders. Notices of this

    procedure will be
published in the Middle School and High School newsletters. Along with this notice will
go an offer to parents and interested students to form a committee to address a place for
skateboarding in town. Board President, Bucky Jordan, would like names of parties
interested in working on this committee. He is willing to help them address this issue.
After Public Participation, the Board adjourned into executive session to discuss
    personnel.
