Date of Goal Setting Conference: October 2002

Subject Area/Grade: Fifth Grade Math/Writing/Science
Evaluator: Mrs. Joan Cole
Proposed Goal: We have set two goals for the 2002-2003 school year. Our first goal is to create a Curriculum Guide that is aligned with the New York State Math and Science Standards. Part of the process of developing the Guide will include meeting and working in collaboration with teachers of fourth and sixth grades. The purpose of the meetings will be to identify and adjust for any gaps or overlaps we may find to be in existence in the subject areas of Math and Science. We will work intensively to incorporate the Science Standards within our Science curriculum by developing units that utilize analysis, inquiry, and design skills. Our second goal is to develop a common language and understanding of the essential traits of writing. This development will occur through the process of reading a book on the 6-Traits of Writing, attending Book Talk sessions, and developing activities incorporating the 6-traits of writing into our curricula. We will also develop grade level rubrics using student samples and anchor papers to effectively assess the students.
Data to Support Goal: In 2002 51% of the general education students scored at a Level 3 or 4 on the Grade 8 ELA. The district goal is for Elba Students to demonstrate a 10% improvement on the mean raw scores on the Book II (Constructed Response section) of the ELA 4 and ELA 8 for the 2003-2004 year.
Correspondence of Proposed Project to Elba Teaching Standards Rubric: HIGH: We will deepen an understanding of subject matter and share the understanding with others, thus developing collaborative relationships and affording us the opportunities to reflect and respond within the professional community. The Professional Development Plan will help us become proactive and develop a repertoire of assessment strategies that are used to shape instructional decisions and encourage students to be responsible for their learning.
Methods to Make Progress:
We will read 6-traits of Writing, participate in Book Talks, collaborate with others, align the curriculum to the Standards, and use DocuShare technology.
