HOMEWORK

Homework is a valuable means of building independence and self-discipline among students. Practice assignments reinforce newly acquired skills and knowledge. Extension assignments encourage individual application, research, or study beyond what has been taught in school.

Homework assignments should have a clearly defined purpose and be directly related to learning objectives. Length and type of homework will vary with grade levels and subject areas. Older students can expect longer and more complex assignments.

In making daily assignments, teachers should consider the impact of school events, the cumulative effect of homework in several subjects, and the availability of materials and resources. Specific, appropriate, and timely teacher feedback should be given to students on homework assignments.

Homework should not be used as a punishment.

Parental involvement in students' homework is essential to making homework an integral part of the educational program. Parents/Guardians are expected to encourage and monitor homework assignments and provide conditions that are conducive to their successful completion.
