provide information on opposing sides of controversial issues so that students may practice critical reading and thinking; and
provide information representative of the many religious, ethnic, and cultural groups and their contributions to our American heritage.
The superintendent shall be responsible for the selection of resource materials within these criteria and for the determination of factual accuracy, readability, authoritativeness, integrity and quality of format.
Whenever possible both print and nonprint media and equipment are to be examined or previewed through professional meetings, conferences, and exhibits. If materials and equipment cannot be physically examined, selection should be based on reviews from recognized sources such as Booklist, School Library Journal, Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, etc.
The selection of materials shall be guided by the philosophy and principles set forth in the following documents:
Library Bill of Rights [1980, American Library Association (ALA) Council]
The Student’s Right to Read [1982, National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)]
Any complaints concerning the selection of library materials should be brought to the district in accordance with the procedure outlined in regulation 1420-R.
If any person wishes to permanently remove materials from a school district library, he/she must seek the formal approval of the Board. The Board shall make its decision based solely on the educational suitability of the material in question.
