Welcome Back!
Another year is upon us with the new challenges we face with new students, new curriculum, new tests, and new personnel! I want thank you all again for your continued interest and support of the science center and all we offer. If there is anything we can do, please don’t hesitate to call (315) 332-7267. If you need supplies, weather you get science kits or not, we may be able to help. Due to our bulk ordering, we may have cheaper prices for your yearly science supplies. Call and ask !
The 4th grade ESPET test went relatively well from feedback I received. There were a few schools that were inadvertently left out of the loop of communications in terms of training and general information from the State. If you need to be added to my mailing list, please call so that I can update my database.
The 8th grade practice test has been completed and many of you already have the kits in your schools. This year is the first year for the Intermediate Level Science Test (ILS). I will
have several meetings and workshops throughout the year to keep you updated. Your science mentor will receive information from me and will distribute the news. If you don’t know who your mentor is or need to change mentors please call me so I can update my files. New testing kits will becoming your way.

For this year only the star lab will be rented at the cost of $175.00/week OR for $215.00/day. The per day price includes “the whole package”!! We will setup the dome, deliver lessons to your students (a teacher helper is required in the dome), pack up the dome and return home. There is a limit of 5 classes/day. Call for more specifics. We are doing this as a trial basis to give teachers a break that are requested to deliver lessons to all the grade levels. There is still time available to rent the lab but hurry, the slots are being booked quickly!

 
Kit Information:
 

 
The new science kits: Animals and Their Coverings, Elementary Solar System, Intermediate Solar System, and Intermediate Earth Science have been well received! They have been updated again to match the most recent core content changes. They have specific major understandings listed along with each lesson. This will help determine what standards you are hitting and which ones, you need to
incorporate into your curriculum. Due to the popularity of these kits, we had to shift some dates around to accommodate all the bookings. Please check your confirmation letters to see when the delivery dates will be for your kit. orders. PLEASE check your confirmation letters to see the arrival times of your kits.
All of the science kits have the standards imbedded into them, although some do not have them listed. We are still working to update the manuals so that the standards are listed with each lesson.
 
Hopefully all your students did well on the new ESPET test. Several questions have come up in regards to the kit and what to do with it. The kits are yours to keep. It should be kept in a secure (locked) location. This will ensure that the test is complete and ready to use next year. There are several schools who have ordered ESPET testing kits again this year. Please check with your administrator and see if you actually need one or if they simply marked it because it was last year. We will try to contact people from our end too.
I will be holding workshops during the school year on parallel tasks to complement those on the test. In March or April I will hold a review session for scoring the manipulative test.

Intermediate Level
Science Test
 


 
The Intermediate Level Science Performance Evaluation Test (ILSPET) is still scheduled to be given in the spring of 2001 to 8th grade students. The test has been piloted and there are sample questions posted on the SED web site: www.emsc.nysed.gov/ciai/mst.html . Most all of you have either ordered or have prepared the practice test for use in your classroom. We still have some in stock if anyone needs one or needs the microscope slides (blood and onion). A new version of the manipulative test will be coming out soon. This will be used for the actual test. I will have more information soon. The deal for microscopes and balances is still in progress. If your school needs these items give Barb Hurrin a call at (315) 332-7335 and she can get an order in for you.
The content portion of the test is based on the Intermediate Core Content Guide. The newest version is now on the Internet at the same address.
The manipulative test is based on the skills listed in the core guide and has the same idea as the ESPET (elementary test). There will be three stations that all students will rotate through. As you know, students must be able to use a compound microscope and a 3-beam balance. There have been questions as to how many microscopes and balances will be needed to do the test. It all depends on how many students you have and how you set up your test. For example, if you have 5 sets of tables set up with the 3 stations at each, you will need 5 microscopes, balances, and the other manipulative materials. That means you will be sending 15 students through the test at a time. If you have 150 students, you will need to administer the manipulative 10 times to accommodate all your students. Remember that these materials should be in your labs year round and if money permits (ha ha, easier said than done) you should have enough equipment for all your lab groups to work with.
 
The meeting scheduled for this January in Albany will again focus on the intermediate level exam. I will attend and gather as much information as possible about the test. I will be holding several meetings throughout the year to discuss needs and wants (sorry no extra money or fewer students!) of the middle level teachers. After the January meeting we will have one last series of sessions dealing with scoring the tests using the state rubrics! If you have any specific questions, please email or call me. FYI: The State has decided to rename the ILSPET to Intermediate Level Science – Part D. It may be written or spoken of as ILS Test – Part D.

Growing Healthy
Growing Healthy is a comprehensive school health education program for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. Managed by the National Center for Health Education (NCHE), Growing Healthy promotes students’ self-esteem and decision-making skills, enabling them to adopt healthy, responsible attitudes and behaviors.
 
A Comprehensive Approach to Health Education
Unlike single-topic curricula, Growing Healthy does it all in 43 – 51 lessons per grade level. Ten major content areas focus on the physical, emotional, and social dimensions of young people’s health. Growing Healthy addresses the following content areas:
  Disease Prevention and Control             Substance Use and Abuse
  Mental/Emotional Health               Nutrition
  Growth and Development               Personal Health
  Family Life and Health               Consumer Health
  Safety and First Aid                 Community and Environmental Health Management
 
 
Training for Growing Healthy has significantly changed. Melissa Stewart from TRC is a master teacher for the program and can customize a training program exclusively for your school! There are no more limitations on the number of participants needed to do training. There are several options as to the number of days needed for training sessions. Additionally, pricing for the kits has been changed!! This year it costs $300.00/6 months for any grade level. All kits will have videos in them at no extra cost. Call Sharon Bassage at (315) 332-7267 for more information. This program can also be funded through certain State health monies.

PROJECT WILD, PROJECT WET, PROJECT AQUATIC
 
Get involved with a wonderful curriculum focusing on wildlife! The lessons are formatted to align with ELA, Math, Social Studies, Art, Music and Science standards. These workshops will introduce you to the curriculum and gives you 100’s of activities to choose from. See the workshops scheduled in November and the additional letter sent to your science contact person for more information.
 

HANDS ON SCIENCE OUTREACH program (HOSO)

This is a new recreational, after school science program for children from pre-K to 6th grade. It is a community program that stimulates “science in your life” awareness through fun activities and experiments. The program is run in your district, 8 weeks long, 1 hour/week (ex. science club), and can be taught by teachers, parents, or possibly by the people from HOSO. Possible topics include, Two feet, Four Feet, Jaws and Claws, Chemistry Detectives, Rocky Road. Teacher training for multiple districts is BOCES “aidable”. PASCO SCIENTIFIC PROBES
We have a growing stock of PASCO Scientific Probes. The electronic probes and interface boxes are available for rental purposes in your school district (similar to a science kit). When you rent the probe, you will receive the software, probes, interface boxes and lab manuals for specific content areas. The use of the probes directly corresponds to the MST standards for using electronic equipment for gathering data. The probes can also be taken outside for stream studies or other laboratory activities. A price list (per probe) and available inventory for the probes are listed.
 I am available to do inservice in your school to help familiarize teachers to the equipment. If you would like me to visit just give me a call! Additionally, there are workshops scheduled with PASCO probes October 12th and December 6th at BOCES. The October workshop will introduce the general program and probes for use in your classroom. The December workshop will feature new probes and a new program to run them. Refer to the workshop schedule on pages 5 and 6 for the time and dates.
