Use a 6cm x 12cm piece of aluminum foil to draw a spider. Make the spider legs about 8 cm long. Fold the spider in half and bend its legs in front of it. Gently lower the spider into a container of water. Does it float? Why do you think it can? Put one drop of dishwashing liquid in the water. See what happens. (The dishwashing liquid breaks the surface tension and causes the spider to move across the water.)The water in the container spread out when it was first poured, but then it began to behave as a "skin". That behavior is called surface tension.
